Procurement Director Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a procurement director in New York?
Most procurement directors in New York reach the role through a combination of a bachelor's degree in supply chain, business, or finance and progressive sourcing or contracts experience, often capped with a professional certification such as the Certified Professional in Supply Management or, for public-sector roles, the Certified Public Purchasing Officer. New York State and New York City government agencies require procurement staff to follow Office of General Services guidelines, and familiarity with state contracting rules is a meaningful differentiator for candidates pursuing public-sector director roles.
How much do procurement directors make in New York?
Procurement directors in New York earn a median of about $166,300 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $102,800 for the lowest 10% to over $282,360 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire procurement directors in New York?
Employers hiring procurement directors in New York right now include NYC Health + Hospitals, Foot Locker, and Genpact, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, major hospital systems, and global technology firms means procurement directors here frequently manage complex, high-value supplier portfolios across multiple business units.
Which New York cities have the most procurement director jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Queens have the most procurement director openings in New York. New York City dominates the list because of its density of corporate headquarters, major hospital networks, and financial services firms, while Buffalo and Albany generate consistent demand through regional healthcare systems, state government agencies, and manufacturing operations that maintain dedicated procurement functions.
Are there remote procurement director jobs in New York?
Yes, and they're more common than in many other fields, since procurement director work is largely analytical, contract-driven, and conducted through digital platforms rather than on a physical site. About 14% of procurement director openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of the role. Strategic sourcing, vendor management, and contract review are the functions most likely to be performed fully remotely.
How can I get hired as a procurement director in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a procurement analyst or purchasing coordinator role first, building toward a manager title before stepping into director-level work. Large New York institutions such as NYC Health and Hospitals, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and major financial firms regularly hire entry-level sourcing analysts and contracts associates as feeder roles. Earning a Certified Professional in Supply Management credential early signals commitment to the field and measurably strengthens candidacy when competing for first-time director openings.
