Tips for Your Head Of Business Development Job Search
Quantify revenue impact on your resume
Head of business development roles demand proof of commercial results. Replace vague phrases like 'grew partnerships' with specific outcomes: pipeline value generated, deal sizes closed, or revenue attributed to your efforts. Hiring teams compare candidates on numbers.
Tailor your pitch to each company stage
A head of business development at a Series A startup and one at a publicly traded firm do fundamentally different work. Reframe your resume language to match the stage, emphasizing early-market entry and partner ecosystems for startups or structured deal frameworks for enterprise employers.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists head of business development openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings with explicit vertical focus
Many head of business development postings specify a target vertical, such as healthcare, fintech, or logistics. Filter for roles that match your existing network and sector relationships. Demonstrating industry-specific deal history makes you far more competitive than a generalist candidate.
Prepare a partnership or deal case study
Interviewers at this level frequently ask you to walk through a complex deal from origination to close. Prepare one concrete example that covers how you identified the opportunity, structured the terms, and managed stakeholder alignment internally and externally.
Negotiate scope before negotiating terms
Before discussing compensation, clarify what success looks like in the first year: revenue targets, partnership volume, or market entry goals. Roles with vague mandates often have misaligned expectations that surface after you start, so surface them during the offer conversation.
Head Of Business Development Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most head of business developments?
The companies hiring the most head of business developments right now include Citi, State Street, and Amazon, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in technology and healthcare services, which consistently post the highest volume of senior business development roles.
How many head of business development jobs are remote?
About 32% of head of business development openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the relationship-driven nature of the role. Strategic partnerships and channel development functions tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while roles tied to enterprise sales or market entry often require on-site presence or regular travel to client sites.
How do you become a head of business development?
Most people reach the head of business development level by progressing through individual contributor business development or enterprise sales roles, closing progressively larger deals, then moving into team leadership. Building a specialization in a specific vertical or deal type, such as channel partnerships or licensing agreements, accelerates the path. Executive visibility, a strong external network, and at least one example of building a function from scratch are what most hiring committees look for.
Can you get a head of business development job with limited experience?
Breaking into a head of business development role without deep experience is difficult but not impossible if you've owned a full deal cycle end to end, even in a smaller organization. Candidates who have led a partnership program, negotiated contracts independently, or built out a revenue function at a startup can make a credible case. Targeting growth-stage companies rather than large enterprises gives you more room to step into a broader scope with a shorter tenure.
What does the head of business development interview process look like?
The process typically runs three to four rounds. An initial screen with HR or a recruiter is followed by a strategic conversation with the hiring executive, often a CEO or CRO, focused on how you identify and prioritize opportunities. Later rounds involve a case presentation or deal walk-through and cross-functional interviews with product, finance, or legal stakeholders. References from past deal counterparts or partners carry significant weight at this level.
Where can I find and apply to head of business development jobs?
You can find and apply to head of business development jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your background and apply directly to each listing. Openings are updated regularly, so checking back frequently gives you access to newly posted positions before they fill.
