Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable Middle School Long-Term Substitute Teacher beginning in November 2026 to provide consistent, high-quality instruction for students in grades 6–8. This position is responsible for teaching multiple subject areas, including Literature, Writing, Mathematics, Bible Study, and Integrated Humanities.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with middle school students, is comfortable teaching across disciplines, and can maintain a structured, engaging, and supportive classroom environment. The long-term substitute will work closely with school administration and fellow teachers to maintain continuity in curriculum, classroom expectations, assessment, and student support.

Primary Responsibilities

The Long-Term Substitute Teacher will:

• Plan, prepare, and deliver daily instruction for students in grades 6–8.
• Follow established curriculum, unit plans, pacing guides, and school academic expectations.
• Teach Literature, guiding students in close reading, comprehension, literary analysis, discussion, and interpretation of age-appropriate texts.
• Teach Writing, including paragraph and essay organization, grammar, revision, evidence-based writing, and the writing process.
• Teach Mathematics, providing clear instruction, guided practice, independent practice, and assessment appropriate to assigned middle school courses.
• Lead Bible Study, helping students understand Sacred Scripture, its historical and theological context, and its application to Christian life.
• Teach Integrated Humanities, connecting literature, history, geography, culture, religion, art, and other disciplines to help students develop a coherent understanding of human civilization.
• Differentiate instruction to meet a range of student abilities and learning needs.
• Provide additional support or enrichment when appropriate.
• Assign, collect, grade, and provide feedback on student work.
• Maintain accurate records of assignments, assessments, grades, and student progress.
• Communicate academic expectations clearly to students.
• Maintain consistent classroom routines, procedures, and behavioral expectations.
• Create a classroom environment characterized by respect, responsibility, curiosity, and productive academic discussion.
• Communicate with parents or guardians regarding student progress or concerns when appropriate.
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, support staff, and other members of the school community.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and other responsibilities expected of instructional staff during the assignment.
• Supervise students during assigned duties such as arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, study hall, Mass, assemblies, or other school activities.
• Uphold school policies, procedures, mission, and professional standards.

Instructional Expectations

Because this position covers several academic disciplines, the successful candidate should be comfortable moving between subjects while maintaining strong classroom organization.

Literature & Writing: Students should be encouraged to read carefully, think critically, participate in thoughtful discussions, and communicate their ideas clearly through writing.

Mathematics: Instruction should emphasize conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, procedural fluency, problem solving, and clear communication of mathematical thinking.

Bible Study: Instruction should encourage knowledge of Scripture, thoughtful discussion, and an understanding of the role of Scripture within the Christian faith and the life of the Church.

Integrated Humanities: Instruction should help students make connections among history, literature, geography, religion, philosophy, art, and culture rather than treating these subjects as completely separate areas of study.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent educational preparation.
• Ability to work effectively with students in grades 6–8.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
• Ability to teach or facilitate learning across multiple academic disciplines.
• Ability to follow established curriculum while adjusting instruction to meet student needs.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, orderly, and academically challenging classroom.

Preferred:

• Previous middle school teaching or substitute teaching experience.
• Teaching license, substitute authorization, or progress toward appropriate state certification.
• Experience teaching mathematics, literature, writing, history/humanities, or theology.
• Experience working in a Catholic or Christian school.
• Familiarity with interdisciplinary or classical approaches to humanities instruction.
• Experience using learning management systems, online gradebooks, and educational technology.

Because this position includes Bible Study and integrated humanities instruction, the teacher should be comfortable presenting Sacred Scripture and Christian history within the context of Catholic teaching and helping students recognize connections among faith, history, literature, culture, and the development of Western civilization.

Physical and Professional Requirements

The position requires the ability to supervise students throughout the school day, move between classrooms or school spaces as necessary, communicate effectively with students and staff, and perform the normal duties associated with a middle school teaching position. The Long-Term Substitute Teacher is expected to maintain confidentiality regarding students and families and comply with all school policies regarding student safety, professional conduct, and mandated reporting.

Schedule

This is a long-term substitute position serving students in grades 6–8 beginning in November and lasting 12 weeks. The substitute will assume the regular instructional and supervisory responsibilities associated with the assigned teaching schedule for the duration of the placement.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience and the school’s long-term substitute compensation schedule.
