Tips for Your Pathologist Job Search
Tailor your CV to subspecialty expectations
Pathologist CVs list fellowship training, board certifications, and procedure volumes front and center. Hiring committees expect granular detail on case mix, frozen section turnaround experience, and any CAP or CLIA laboratory oversight roles you have held.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists pathologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by practice setting first
Academic, community hospital, and reference lab positions carry very different expectations for research output, call burden, and autonomy. Decide which environment fits your career stage before you apply so your cover letter speaks directly to that culture.
Document your sign-out software proficiency
Many job descriptions specify CoPath, Soft, or Beaker LIS experience. Name the systems you have used and note any configuration, validation, or quality assurance work, since LIS familiarity shortens credentialing timelines and signals readiness to sign out independently.
Prepare case presentations for panel interviews
Academic and large health system interviews often include a clinical case presentation before a faculty panel. Practice presenting two or three complex cases that showcase your diagnostic reasoning, correlation with clinical history, and communication with clinical colleagues.
Negotiate call schedule and FTE before signing
Call burden and full-time equivalent allocations vary widely and are rarely posted in job ads. Clarify frozen section call frequency, remote sign-out arrangements, and research or administrative protected time during the offer stage, not after you accept.
Pathologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most pathologists?
The companies hiring the most pathologists right now include FOX Rehabilitation, HealthPRO Heritage, and Ivyrehab Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy & Speech-Language Pathology, Pllc, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic health systems and national reference laboratory networks consistently account for a large portion of active postings.
How many pathologist jobs are remote?
About 2% of pathologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the growth of digital pathology platforms that allow remote whole-slide image review and sign-out. Subspecialties with the highest remote share include cytopathology consultation, dermatopathology, and second-opinion diagnostic services, while intraoperative frozen section coverage almost always requires on-site presence.
How do you become a pathologist?
You earn an MD or DO degree, then complete a pathology residency accredited by the ACGME, which covers anatomic and clinical pathology training. After residency, most candidates sit for board certification through the American Board of Pathology. Many then pursue a one-year subspecialty fellowship to sharpen expertise in areas like hematopathology, surgical pathology, or forensic pathology before entering independent practice.
Can you get hired as a pathologist with no prior attending experience?
Yes, newly trained pathologists are routinely hired directly out of residency or fellowship. Community hospital groups and reference laboratories often onboard recent graduates for staff positions with structured mentorship and supervised sign-out periods. Academic departments also post junior faculty and instructor-level roles designed for candidates who finished training within the past year or two, provided board eligibility is in place.
What does the pathologist interview process look like?
Most pathologist interviews begin with a phone or video screening with a physician recruiter or department chair. Finalists are invited to an on-site visit that typically includes a tour of the laboratory, one-on-one meetings with current pathologists, a meeting with administrative or credentialing staff, and sometimes a case-based presentation before a faculty panel. The process from initial contact to offer commonly takes several weeks.
Where can I find and apply to pathologist jobs?
You can find and apply to pathologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from hospitals, health systems, reference laboratories, and academic medical centers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your subspecialty training and practice setting preference, then apply directly to each position that fits.
