Planner Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a planner in Texas?
Most Texas planner roles require at least a bachelor's degree in urban planning, regional planning, geography, or a closely related field. Texas does not issue a state-specific planning license, but professional credentialing through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), administered by the American Planning Association, is widely expected for mid-level and senior positions. Many Texas municipalities also require familiarity with the Texas Local Government Code as a working baseline.
Which companies hire planners in Texas?
Employers hiring planners in Texas right now include Celestica, Garver, and HP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's combination of fast-growing cities, major transportation corridors, and large corporate headquarters creates steady demand across both public agencies and private sector planning departments.
Which Texas cities have the most planner jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas have the most planner openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because of their scale as major metropolitan areas with active transportation, land use, and corporate planning departments, while Austin's sustained population growth and aggressive infrastructure development keep its public agency and consulting planning pipelines consistently full.
Are there remote planner jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since much planning work involves site visits, public hearings, and collaboration with local agencies. About 12% of planner openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote share concentrated in analytics-heavy functions like supply chain planning, demand forecasting, and GIS data work.
How can I get hired as a planner in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through internships or assistant planner roles with Texas city planning departments, which routinely recruit new graduates from programs at Texas A&M, UT Austin, and the University of Texas at Arlington. Large Texas transit authorities like DART and METRO Houston post entry-level planning analyst positions that accept candidates without field experience. A capstone portfolio demonstrating GIS work, zoning analysis, or community engagement projects gives applicants a concrete edge over candidates with no documented work.
Where can I find and apply to planner jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to planner jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across cities, agencies, and industries. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly without any additional steps.
