Professor Jobs in Wisconsin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a professor in Wisconsin?
Becoming a professor in Wisconsin typically requires completing a terminal degree in your field, such as a Ph.D. or MFA, followed by applying to open faculty positions at Wisconsin universities, colleges, or technical schools. Wisconsin does not issue a state license for most professor roles, but positions at Wisconsin Technical College System campuses may require or prefer a relevant professional credential or vocational certification alongside teaching qualifications.
Which companies hire professors in Wisconsin?
Employers hiring professors in Wisconsin right now include Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin–Madison, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The University of Wisconsin System, with flagship and regional campuses statewide, is consistently among the largest sources of faculty openings across disciplines.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most professor jobs?
Milwaukee, Madison, and Platteville have the most professor openings in Wisconsin. Madison dominates due to the UW-Madison flagship and several private colleges, Milwaukee draws from Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and a large community college network, and Green Bay reflects hiring at UW-Green Bay and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College serving the region's manufacturing and healthcare industries.
Are there remote professor jobs in Wisconsin?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields, since most faculty roles involve in-person instruction, labs, or student advising. About 9% of professor openings tied to Wisconsin are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with online teaching assignments and continuing education courses representing the most remote-accessible segment of the market.
How can I get hired as a professor in Wisconsin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is adjunct or part-time faculty work, which most Wisconsin institutions use to bring in new instructors before offering full-time positions. The University of Wisconsin System campuses and Wisconsin Technical College System schools regularly hire adjuncts in high-need areas like nursing, computer science, and business. Building a teaching portfolio, completing a postdoctoral fellowship, or moving from a related role such as industry researcher, clinical practitioner, or high school educator strengthens your candidacy significantly.
Where can I find and apply to professor jobs in Wisconsin?
