Restaurant Assistant Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a restaurant assistant manager in California?
Most California restaurant assistant managers begin in hourly front-of-house or back-of-house roles and advance through demonstrated performance. A Food Safety Manager certification from a California Department of Public Health-accredited program, such as ServSafe, is required by most employers and by many county health departments. A degree in hospitality management or business from a California community college or university strengthens candidacy, though many employers promote from within based on operational results.
How much do restaurant assistant managers make in California?
Restaurant assistant managers in California earn a median of about $78,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,690 for the lowest 10% to over $127,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire restaurant assistant managers in California?
Employers hiring restaurant assistant managers in California right now include Wendy's, CKE Restaurants Holdings, and Sweetgreen, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense urban markets and strong tourism economy mean openings appear consistently at both independent restaurant groups and large multi-unit chains operating throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most restaurant assistant manager jobs?
Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Los Angeles have the most restaurant assistant manager openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its size and year-round tourism, San Francisco supports strong demand from its hotel and upscale dining concentration, and San Diego benefits from hospitality growth tied to its convention center and coastal restaurant scene, making each city a distinct source of steady openings.
Are there remote restaurant assistant manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they are rare. Restaurant assistant management is an inherently on-site role requiring daily floor presence, staff supervision, and guest interaction. About 0% of restaurant assistant manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve multi-unit or corporate-level responsibilities rather than single-location floor management.
How can I get hired as a restaurant assistant manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a shift lead or key holder at a California quick-service or fast-casual restaurant, where promotion timelines are shorter than in full-service dining. Large California-based operators and hotel food and beverage departments regularly hire assistant managers from internal hourly staff. Obtaining a Food Safety Manager certification before applying signals readiness and meets a requirement most California employers list as non-negotiable for management candidates.
Where can I find and apply to restaurant assistant manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to restaurant assistant manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
