Retail Sales Representative Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a retail sales representative in California?
Most retail sales representative positions in California require a high school diploma or equivalent and no state-issued license for general merchandise roles. Candidates selling specific regulated products, such as firearms or certain financial products, must obtain the appropriate California Department of Justice or Department of Financial Protection and Innovation registrations. Entry-level candidates typically start on the sales floor, build product knowledge, and advance through employer training programs into higher-volume accounts.
How much do retail sales representatives make in California?
Retail sales representatives in California earn a median of about $38,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $35,240 for the lowest 10% to over $54,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire retail sales representatives in California?
Employers hiring retail sales representatives in California right now include Dealer Tire and Avis Budget, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large consumer market and high concentration of flagship retail locations mean established chains and specialty retailers post consistently throughout the year, particularly in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and San Diego.
Which California cities have the most retail sales representative jobs?
Cerritos, Colton, and Escondido have the most retail sales representative openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to its dense population and concentration of flagship brand stores, luxury retail corridors, and large shopping centers, while San Diego and the Bay Area generate strong demand from consumer electronics retailers, automotive dealerships, and specialty chains that anchor major commercial districts in both regions.
Are there remote retail sales representative jobs in California?
Yes, but they're uncommon. Most retail sales representative roles require in-person customer interaction, making fully remote positions the exception rather than the rule. About 0% of retail sales representative openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve inside sales, telephone-based account management, or B2B wholesale roles rather than traditional floor selling.
How can I get hired as a retail sales representative in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for seasonal associate or floor sales roles at large California retailers such as Target, Best Buy, or Macy's, which regularly hire candidates without prior sales experience and provide structured onboarding. Completing a short customer service or retail fundamentals course through a California community college strengthens an application. Moving laterally from a cashier, stock associate, or customer service representative role within the same employer is a common and effective way to transition into a commissioned sales position.
Where can I find and apply to retail sales representative jobs in California?
You can find and apply to retail sales representative jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
