Social Media Manager Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a social media manager in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania does not require a state-issued license or certification to work as a social media manager. Most employers in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg hire candidates with a bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related field, combined with a portfolio showing platform management and campaign results. Certifications from Meta Blueprint or HubSpot can strengthen an application, and many roles list platform-specific advertising credentials as a meaningful differentiator.
How much do social media managers make in Pennsylvania?
Social media managers in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $68,760 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $34,160 for the lowest 10% to over $128,810 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire social media managers in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania social media manager roles are posted by Penn State University, WebFX, and 232 Creative and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of healthcare systems, consumer brands, and regional media companies generates consistent demand for in-house social media talent throughout the year.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most social media manager jobs?
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and University Park account for the largest share of social media manager openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of its dense concentration of corporate headquarters, healthcare systems, and consumer brands, while Pittsburgh's tech and healthcare sectors drive demand there, and Harrisburg's government agencies and regional associations generate a steady but smaller stream of openings.
Are there remote social media manager jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 68% of social media manager openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting how naturally the work fits distributed teams. Content creation, scheduling, analytics, and community management are the functions most commonly done fully remote, while roles requiring on-site shoots or executive collaboration tend to require at least a hybrid arrangement.
How can I get hired as a social media manager in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a marketing coordinator or content coordinator role at a Pennsylvania-based healthcare system, university, or regional consumer brand, where social media is one part of a broader communications function. UPMC, Jefferson Health, and Penn Medicine all run structured marketing associate programs that bring in candidates without dedicated social experience. Building a portfolio through freelance work for local nonprofits or small businesses in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, combined with a Meta Blueprint or Google Digital Marketing certificate, gives early-career candidates a concrete edge in the Pennsylvania market.
