The standard path in Maryland begins with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, followed by passing the CPA exam and fulfilling the experience requirement set by the Maryland Board of Public Accountancy. Maryland requires candidates to complete a set number of credit hours in accounting and business before licensure. Many tax accountants also pursue an Enrolled Agent credential through the IRS, which is recognized across all states and is valuable for tax-focused roles in Maryland's government-adjacent market.
How much do tax accountants make in Maryland?
Tax accountants in Maryland earn a median of about $47,020 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,700 for the lowest 10% to over $69,790 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax accountants in Maryland?
Employers hiring tax accountants in Maryland right now include Snyder Cohn, Lockheed Martin, and Weber Messick, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Maryland's mix of financial services firms, federal contractors, and large healthcare organizations means consistent openings across both public accounting and in-house corporate tax teams.
Which Maryland cities have the most tax accountant jobs?
Bethesda, North Bethesda, and Laurel have the most tax accountant openings in Maryland. Baltimore anchors the market as home to major financial institutions, healthcare systems, and professional services firms, while Bethesda and Rockville draw strong demand from federal contractors and multinational corporations based in the D.C. corridor. Annapolis generates additional openings through state government agencies and surrounding professional services firms.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 86% of tax accountant openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the role involves software-based return preparation, analysis, and client communication rather than on-site work. Tax review, compliance research, and advisory functions tend to be the most remote-compatible parts of the job.
How can I get hired as a tax accountant in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a staff tax associate or junior accountant role at a regional or national public accounting firm with Maryland offices, such as those concentrated in Baltimore and the Bethesda corridor. Large Maryland employers like CareFirst and T. Rowe Price also hire through new-graduate programs for finance and accounting talent. Completing the CPA exam sections early, even before full licensure, and gaining experience through an accounting internship or a bookkeeping or accounts payable role gives candidates a measurable edge when applying.
