Tax Senior Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax senior in Maryland?
To become a tax senior in Maryland, you typically need an active CPA license issued or recognized by the Maryland Board of Public Accountancy, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Maryland's education and experience requirements. Most employers also expect a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and several years of tax experience in public accounting or a corporate tax department before promoting to a senior level.
How much do tax seniors make in Maryland?
Tax seniors in Maryland earn a median of about $89,370 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,760 for the lowest 10% to over $156,660 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax seniors in Maryland?
Maryland tax senior roles are posted by CohnReznick, Weaver, and CBIZ and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Maryland's mix of large professional services firms, federal contractors, and financial institutions headquartered in the Baltimore-Washington corridor means openings are distributed across both large national firms and regional employers with deep local roots.
Which Maryland cities have the most tax senior jobs?
Bethesda, Baltimore, and Rockville hold the most tax senior openings in Maryland. Baltimore anchors demand through its concentration of regional accounting firms, financial institutions, and hospital systems, while Bethesda and Rockville draw heavily from the corridor of corporate headquarters, government contractors, and wealth management firms that line the I-270 technology and professional services belt.
Are there remote tax senior jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields, because tax senior work is largely analytical and document-driven rather than requiring a physical presence. About 64% of tax senior openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the broad shift toward flexible arrangements in professional services. Tax compliance and provision work tends to be the most remote-friendly, while client-facing advisory and audit-support roles more often require in-office or on-site time.
How can I get hired as a tax senior in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is entering through a staff accountant or tax associate role at a Maryland public accounting firm and building toward senior over two to three years. Large firms in the Baltimore and Bethesda markets run structured new-graduate programs that rotate associates through tax, and regional firms such as CohnReznick and Aronson actively recruit from University of Maryland and Towson University. Sitting for the CPA exam early and gaining exposure to multi-state returns or ASC 740 work significantly accelerates the move into a senior title.
Where can I find and apply to tax senior jobs in Maryland?
