INTRODUCTION
The substation technical trainer is responsible for oversight, development and delivery of instructional activities associated with electric operations in accordance with Department of Labor, Department of Transportation and Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements. Delivers consistent technical training programs to support employees safely doing the job right the first time to the satisfaction of customers, regulators, shareholders and management. Primary responsibilities will be to conduct supplemental training for apprentices, lead apprentices in training crews and deliver training to support other represented positions as needed. Provides electric technical support to the delivery safety committees and to the safety department as required.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts hands-on training in operation procedures, standard practices, equipment, emergency procedures/response and other technical/craft-specific training. (40%)
Collaborates with training team and leadership to reinforce and modify training as needed. (0-5%)
Works with instructional designer on materials as well as new/revised standards as applicable. (0-5%)
Performs gap/needs analysis as required. (0-5%)
Directs and coordinates operational training as a subject-matter expert for specific craft issues and works as part of multi-function teams to ensure integration of training needs with ancillary work groups that interact with craft personnel. (5-10%)
Develops, reviews and plans training materials to meet compliance and training requirements for craft-specific training. (0-10%)
Ensures training programs and field on-the-job experience meets the compliance and training needs of MEC and craft-specific employee groups. (0-5%)
Directs, reviews and coordinate maintenance of training documentation and references. (0-5%)
Evaluates field craft work of trainees and journey-workers for adherence to regulations and standards as part of the safety and training program evaluation requirements and provides effective feedback. (0-5%)
Communicates and ensures continual improvement of training processes, methods, strategies and techniques. (0-5%)
Perform supervisory activities, including employee safety, selection and development of employee, employee counseling and motivation, and salary administration. Assist in the administration of the department budget and reporting the work performed within the department. Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (0-5%)
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in technical engineering, business administration or related field. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)
Six years field experience in utility or energy industry, or similar field operations with two or more years of prior experience in training, mentoring and/or supervising required.
Journey-level certification in specific craft of focus preferred.
Working knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements that affect the specific craft area of focus.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with, coach and develop diverse employees.
Ability to provide hands-on training.
Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
