Which energy companies in Florida sponsor H-1B visas?
NextEra Energy and its subsidiary Florida Power and Light are among the most active H-1B visa sponsors in Florida's energy sector, with documented filings for engineering and technical roles. Duke Energy Florida, Tampa Electric (TECO Energy), and Orlando Utilities Commission have also filed H-1B petitions. Smaller renewable energy developers and engineering consultancies operating across the state sponsor H-1B workers as well, particularly for specialized technical positions.
Which cities in Florida have the most energy H-1B sponsorship jobs?
The Miami and Fort Lauderdale area leads due to NextEra Energy's headquarters in Juno Beach, which draws significant engineering and technical talent statewide. Tampa and St. Petersburg represent a strong secondary market anchored by TECO Energy and Duke Energy Florida operations. Orlando hosts OUC and growing renewable project activity, while Jacksonville has utility and energy infrastructure roles tied to JEA and regional contractors.
What types of energy roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Florida?
Roles that consistently qualify involve a requirement for a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field. In Florida's energy sector, this includes electrical engineers, power systems engineers, nuclear engineers, renewable energy project engineers, grid operations analysts, environmental compliance specialists, and control systems engineers. Roles at the intersection of energy and software, such as energy data analysts and SCADA engineers, are also commonly sponsored under H-1B.
How do I find energy H-1B sponsorship jobs in Florida?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters energy jobs in Florida that include H-1B visa sponsorship. Rather than sorting through general job listings, Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers with a documented history of sponsoring H-1B workers in the energy sector. You can filter by state and industry to focus your search on Florida energy opportunities without wading through positions that don't offer sponsorship.
Are there any Florida-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in the energy industry?
Florida has no state income tax, which affects prevailing wage comparisons since the Department of Labor's wage determinations are based on federal data for the specific metropolitan area. Energy employers in Florida operating nuclear facilities, such as FPL, are subject to federal security clearance requirements that can affect which H-1B candidates they consider. Florida's rapid solar and grid modernization growth has also increased demand for specialized engineers, making it a more active H-1B sponsoring market than its size alone would suggest.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B energy jobs in Florida?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
