INTRODUCTION
Indiana University, Bloomington
Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering
Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering
Postdoctoral Fellow in Quantum Materials and Devices – Deng Research Group
Prof. Bingchen Deng in the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on investigating emerging physical phenomena in low-dimensional quantum materials and leverage them in device applications. The candidates should be familiar with quantum physics and solid-state physics/devices and should have extensive hands-on experimental experience in one of the following fields: condensed matter physics, electrical engineering, or materials science. Prior experience in nanodevice fabrication and electrical/optical measurements is preferred but not required. The position is available immediately.
Our research explores fundamental science of low-dimensional quantum materials and their applications in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. We study quantum confinement, light-matter interactions, topology, and strongly correlated electrons in a wide range of low-dimensional materials using nanofabricated devices and electrical and optical measurements. These efforts aim to uncover new physical phenomena and translate them into applications in semiconductor industry, quantum technologies, optical sensing, and so on.
We are committed to providing a supportive and collaborative environment for all group members to conduct innovative and independent research. The postdoctoral fellow will receive regular feedback and guidance through group meetings and individual meetings and will develop key technical and professional skills that are valuable for careers in academia or industry.
Appointment Type: Full-time non-tenure track appointment.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in one of the following or related fields by the time of the appointment: Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering.
- Hands-on experimental experience with solid-state device/materials.

- Good communication skills including oral and written.
- Strong work ethics, motivations, and problem-solving capabilities.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in one or more of the following is preferred:
- 2D materials processing (exfoliation, synthesis, transfer, etc.)
- Nanodevice fabrication in cleanroom environment (EBL, metallization, dry etching, ALD, etc.)
- Electrical transport measurements at low temperatures
- Optical spectroscopic measurements
- Materials characterizations (AFM, SEM, TEM, Raman, etc.)

Which education employers in Indiana are known to sponsor Green Cards?
Indiana University and Purdue University are the most active Green Card sponsors in the state, frequently filing permanent labor certifications for tenure-track faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and specialized academic staff. Indianapolis Public Schools, Fort Wayne Community Schools, and several private K-12 institutions also sponsor permanent residence for roles that are difficult to fill domestically, including bilingual educators and STEM specialists.
Which cities in Indiana have the most education Green Card sponsorship jobs?
Bloomington and West Lafayette lead due to Indiana University and Purdue University's size and international hiring practices. Indianapolis follows closely, with sponsorship activity spread across public school districts, private schools, and several higher education campuses. Fort Wayne and South Bend also have sponsorship activity, particularly through regional universities and larger K-12 districts serving diverse student populations.
What types of education roles typically qualify for Green Card sponsorship in Indiana?
Tenure-track and research faculty positions are the most common, typically sponsored through the EB-1A or EB-2 National Interest Waiver or PERM labor certification pathways. Specialized K-12 roles, including bilingual teachers, special education specialists, and STEM instructors, also qualify frequently. Administrative positions requiring advanced degrees, such as curriculum directors and institutional research analysts, are sponsored when qualified U.S. workers are not available.
How do I find education Green Card sponsorship jobs in Indiana?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by Indiana, the education industry, and Green Card sponsorship to see verified opportunities from employers with a history of permanent residence sponsorship. This is more targeted than general job searches because Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have sponsored immigration before, which matters significantly in education where sponsorship practices vary widely by institution and district.
Are there any Indiana-specific considerations for Green Card sponsorship in education?
Indiana's public universities operate under state employment rules that can affect PERM recruitment timelines, since they must conduct documented good-faith recruitment before certifying no qualified U.S. worker is available. For K-12 positions, Indiana's teacher licensure requirements apply regardless of immigration status, so foreign-trained educators typically need to obtain Indiana state teaching certification before or alongside the sponsorship process.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card education jobs in Indiana?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
