Which government employers in Iowa sponsor H-1B visas?
Iowa's most active H-1B visa sponsors in the government sector include the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa. State agencies such as the Iowa Department of Public Health and federal facilities in Des Moines also appear in DOL Labor Condition Application filings. Public universities account for the largest share of government-sector H-1B certifications in Iowa, particularly for research, faculty, and clinical roles.
Which Iowa cities have the most government H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Iowa City leads due to the University of Iowa's large research and medical enterprise, followed by Ames, home to Iowa State University. Des Moines, as the state capital, generates openings at state agencies and federal offices. Cedar Rapids and Davenport have smaller but consistent government-sector LCA filing activity, primarily tied to public health, engineering, and administrative positions at regional government entities.
How do I find government H-1B sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for H-1B sponsoring employers in Iowa's government and public sector, using verified DOL Labor Condition Application data. This means you can see which agencies and public institutions have actively filed for H-1B workers, rather than relying on job postings that don't disclose sponsorship. Search by city or institution to narrow results to Iowa City, Ames, or Des Moines government roles.
What types of government roles in Iowa typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship in Iowa's government sector most commonly covers specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Common qualifying roles include research scientists, civil and environmental engineers, public health analysts, information technology specialists, economists, and university faculty. Roles that require generalist qualifications or lack a degree-field connection to the position typically do not meet the USCIS specialty occupation standard.
Are there Iowa-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in government jobs?
Iowa's government H-1B filings are heavily concentrated in higher education, which means cap-exempt sponsorship is a realistic path for many applicants. Universities and affiliated nonprofit research entities may file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery under USCIS cap-exemption rules. State and county agencies, however, are generally cap-subject employers, meaning positions there require H-1B registration and selection in the annual lottery before a petition can be filed.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B government jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
