Which medical devices companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Michigan?
Michigan has a strong base of medical devices employers with documented OPT hiring histories. Stryker, headquartered in Kalamazoo, is one of the most active sponsors in the state. Gentex, Autocam Medical, and Perrigo also operate significant Michigan facilities. Larger companies with established HR infrastructure and STEM OPT compliance programs tend to be the most consistent sponsors for F-1 students.
Which cities in Michigan have the most medical devices F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo collectively account for a large share of Michigan's medical devices employment, driven by Stryker's headquarters and a dense network of contract manufacturers and suppliers in the region. Metro Detroit offers additional opportunities, particularly in combination device and automotive-adjacent medical technology. Smaller hubs like Holland and Portage also have active medical devices employers within commuting distance of these cities.
What types of medical devices roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles that align directly with a STEM-eligible degree field are the most common fit for F-1 OPT in Michigan's medical devices sector. Quality engineering, regulatory affairs, R&D engineering, manufacturing engineering, and biomedical systems roles frequently appear in OPT hiring. Positions requiring a degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field typically qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, which is a significant factor for employers evaluating F-1 candidates.
How do I find medical devices F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT job seekers and filters medical devices roles in Michigan by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're not sorting through postings that don't apply to your status. Search by state and industry on Migrate Mate to surface employers actively hiring OPT candidates in Michigan's medical devices sector. Targeting companies with prior OPT or H-1B visa sponsorship records meaningfully improves your chances of advancing past initial screening.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for F-1 OPT in the medical devices industry?
Michigan's medical devices sector has strong ties to its manufacturing base, which means many roles involve on-site work at production or R&D facilities rather than remote arrangements. F-1 OPT requires that your employment be directly related to your degree field, so documenting that connection is important, particularly for cross-functional roles. Students at Michigan universities like University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Western Michigan University benefit from proximity to major employers and established recruiting pipelines into the local medical devices industry.
