Which construction companies sponsor H-2B visas in Michigan?
Michigan construction H-2B sponsors tend to be mid-size to large general contractors and specialty subcontractors handling seasonal infrastructure, commercial, and residential projects. Civil engineering firms working on road and bridge contracts in southeast Michigan and the Grand Rapids metro are consistent filers. Companies with recurring seasonal labor needs are most likely to maintain established H-2B sponsorship programs, since the petitioning process involves DOL certification before USCIS approval.
Which cities in Michigan have the most construction H-2B sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding metro counties see the highest concentration of H-2B construction filings, driven by ongoing commercial redevelopment and infrastructure investment. Grand Rapids has grown significantly as a hub for both commercial and residential construction activity. Lansing, Flint, and Traverse City also generate seasonal construction demand, particularly for exterior trades and site preparation work tied to Michigan's shorter outdoor building season.
How do I find construction H-2B sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa type and state, so you can search Michigan construction roles where employers have active H-2B sponsorship history. This saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship availability late in the process. DOL's OFLC Wage Search also lets you verify which Michigan employers have filed H-2B Labor Condition Applications for construction occupations in recent seasons, giving you a targeted starting point.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-2B sponsorship?
H-2B sponsorship in construction covers temporary, non-agricultural positions where U.S. workers are not available in sufficient numbers for a defined season or project period. Common qualifying roles include carpenters, concrete finishers, ironworkers, roofers, laborers, and heavy equipment operators. The work must be genuinely temporary, meaning tied to a specific season, one-time project, or peak-load period, and employers must complete DOL prevailing wage determination before filing.
Are there state-specific considerations for H-2B construction jobs in Michigan?
Michigan's climate creates a defined outdoor construction season roughly from spring through late fall, which aligns well with the H-2B temporary need requirement. Employers must demonstrate the work is seasonal or tied to a project timeline, and Michigan's prevailing wage obligations under state law can interact with the DOL's federal prevailing wage determination process. Workers in certain skilled trades may also need Michigan-specific licensing or certifications before beginning work on regulated project types.
What is the prevailing wage for H-2B construction jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
