Which government employers in Nebraska sponsor H-1B visas?
The University of Nebraska Medical Center and the broader University of Nebraska system are among the most active government-affiliated H-1B sponsors in the state, filing petitions for research, healthcare, and IT roles. Federal agencies with a significant presence in Nebraska, including those tied to the Offutt Air Force Base area and the U.S. Department of Agriculture facilities in Lincoln, also sponsor H-1B workers in qualifying specialty occupations.
Which cities in Nebraska have the most government H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Omaha and Lincoln account for the large majority of government H-1B sponsorship activity in Nebraska. Lincoln concentrates state government agencies, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and federal offices, while Omaha is home to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, federal district offices, and military-affiliated contractors. Outside these two cities, H-1B sponsorship in government roles is considerably less common.
What types of government roles in Nebraska typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Roles that qualify must meet the H-1B specialty occupation standard, meaning they require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. In Nebraska's government sector, this commonly includes software developers and IT specialists, biomedical and public health researchers, civil and environmental engineers, and policy analysts with specialized academic backgrounds. General administrative or clerical positions typically do not meet the specialty occupation threshold.
How do I find government H-1B sponsorship jobs in Nebraska?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking H-1B sponsorship and filters government jobs in Nebraska by visa type, making it easier to identify employers with active sponsorship history. Because government H-1B roles in Nebraska are concentrated in Omaha and Lincoln, filtering by those cities on Migrate Mate will surface the most relevant opportunities at universities, federal agencies, and state bodies.
Are there any state-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in Nebraska's government sector?
Nebraska's government H-1B market is smaller than coastal states, so the volume of active petitions is more limited. Public universities like the University of Nebraska system are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions year-round without being subject to the annual H-1B lottery. This is a meaningful distinction for candidates targeting academic or research-affiliated government roles, as cap-exempt employers offer more predictable hiring timelines.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B government jobs in Nebraska?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
