Which education employers in New York sponsor Green Cards?
New York's largest education Green Card sponsors include major research universities such as Columbia University, New York University, and the State University of New York (SUNY) system, as well as the New York City Department of Education for specialized teacher shortages. Private K-12 schools, community colleges, and edtech companies headquartered in New York City also file immigrant petitions, though sponsorship practices vary significantly by institution size and hiring need.
Which cities in New York have the most education Green Card sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the overwhelming majority of education Green Card sponsorship activity in the state, driven by its concentration of universities, public school systems, and edtech companies. Buffalo and Albany have meaningful activity through SUNY campuses and regional school districts. Ithaca is notable for Cornell University. Smaller upstate cities generally have limited sponsorship volume outside of individual SUNY campuses.
What types of education roles typically qualify for Green Card sponsorship in New York?
Higher education faculty positions, research scientists at university-affiliated labs, and specialized K-12 teachers in shortage subjects such as mathematics, science, and special education are the most commonly sponsored roles. Curriculum developers, instructional designers, and edtech engineers at New York-based education technology companies also qualify. Roles requiring a specific advanced degree tied directly to the position are the strongest candidates for employer-sponsored Green Card petitions.
How do I find education Green Card sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you filter by visa type, industry, and state to surface education roles in New York where employers have a documented history of Green Card sponsorship. Because sponsorship willingness is rarely stated in standard job postings, filtering through a platform like Migrate Mate that aggregates sponsorship data saves significant time compared to reviewing individual institution career pages.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for Green Card sponsorship in education?
New York State's prevailing wage requirements under Department of Labor standards apply to PERM-based Green Card filings, meaning employers must document that the offered position meets regional wage benchmarks for the role. New York City's density of nonprofit and public educational institutions means many sponsors are familiar with the PERM process. However, public school districts are subject to civil service and union rules that can affect how and when they initiate sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card education jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
