Which government employers in North Carolina sponsor H-1B visas?
Public universities are the most consistent H-1B visa sponsors in North Carolina's government sector. UNC Chapel Hill, NC State University, and Duke University (as a nonprofit research institution) file H-1B petitions regularly for faculty, researchers, and technical staff. State agencies and federal facilities in the Research Triangle, including EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab, also appear in DOL disclosure data as H-1B employers.
Which cities in North Carolina have the most government H-1B sponsorship jobs?
The Research Triangle area, covering Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, concentrates the largest share of government H-1B sponsorship activity in North Carolina. Raleigh hosts state government offices and NC State University. Durham and Chapel Hill anchor UNC System institutions. Charlotte has some federal agency presence, and Fayetteville has activity tied to Fort Liberty, though university-affiliated roles dominate H-1B filings statewide.
What types of government roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in North Carolina?
Roles that qualify must meet the H-1B specialty occupation standard, requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to the position. In North Carolina's public sector, this commonly includes research scientists, biostatisticians, environmental engineers, public health analysts, IT specialists, and faculty positions at public universities. General administrative or broadly defined roles without a specific degree requirement typically do not qualify.
How do I find government H-1B sponsorship jobs in North Carolina?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by visa type (H-1B), industry (Government and Public Sector), and state (North Carolina) to see active postings from employers with a demonstrated history of sponsorship. This is more targeted than searching general job boards, since Migrate Mate surfaces roles where sponsorship is explicitly part of the hiring context rather than requiring you to guess at employer policy.
Are there any specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in North Carolina's government sector?
Public universities operate as cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. This is a meaningful distinction from private-sector H-1B jobs, which are subject to the 85,000-slot cap and March registration window. State agencies and federal contractors, however, are generally cap-subject. Confirming whether a specific employer is cap-exempt is an important step before applying to government roles in North Carolina.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B government jobs in North Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
