ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for Senior Advisor – Communities and Social Performance (CSP) to support Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) both at the global level and within the US context.
This is a great opportunity to apply your CSP expertise, exceptional stakeholder engagement skills and desire to extend your knowledge of community engagement in an environment which offers multiple challenges and opportunities.
Reporting to the General Manager, CSP, and part of a collaborative team, you will:
- Lead CSP strategy and practice in the United States, helping build positive relationships with local communities while embedding Rio Tinto’s CSP standards.
- Develop and deliver strategic CSP planning, including stakeholder engagement, communication planning and record keeping in CommUnity Connect.
- Facilitate and support community and stakeholder meetings, representing Rio Tinto Exploration where required and enabling others to do the same.
- Build CSP capability across US and global project teams through training, coaching and guidance that embed CSP principles into everyday ways of working.
- Maintain CSP-related knowledge bases, including project assessments, risk inputs, project management documentation and application of the RTX CSP Procedure.
- Research socio-economic, cultural heritage and related regional issues to support current and future exploration projects.
- Strengthen the global use of CommUnity Connect and related CSP tools by identifying opportunities for improvement, training and rollout support.
- Support CSP reporting, coordination and global initiatives, including quarterly KPI reporting, biweekly CSP reports, social and economic survey inputs and other CSP-related tasks as required.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- University or graduate degree within a relevant field such as the social sciences or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience of at least 8 years working at the community level as well as in corporate role(s) related to social performance, ideally in the extractives, especially mining.
- Previous experience in and knowledge of social performance tools and processes such as establishing and building strong community relations, stakeholder analysis, social and economic baseline assessments, and the like. Experience in working with Native American Tribes in the Western US and/or other Indigenous Peoples is highly valued.
- Outstanding analytical and writing skills in English and the ability to quickly consolidate information into polished written products and presentations. Professional proficiency in another language (especially Spanish) and/or work experience outside of the US will be considered a significant plus.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport with a wide range of people, ability to influence others positively and build consensus around a course of action.
