INTRODUCTION

Main Purpose of Role - Laboratory Technician & Data Analyst

Reporting to the Data Analysis Manager, this hybrid role combines laboratory operations with data analysis. The Laboratory Technician & Data Analyst utilizes a strong foundation in laboratory techniques and molecular biology processes to perform DNA genotyping and support high-throughput genetic testing.

The role involves working with laboratory automation and robotics, analyzing large datasets, supporting genotype submissions and conflict resolution processes, and developing tools and programs to improve operational efficiency. This position plays a critical role in laboratory operations, data quality, customer support, and global genotype data management.

Work Schedule

• Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
• 20% differential for any weekend hours worked

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory records, including sample tracking, testing procedures, and data analysis results.
• Prepare reports, summaries, and presentations as required.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with established laboratory standards and best practices.
• Preserve sample integrity while processing samples for high-throughput genetic analyses.
• Prepare laboratory stock solutions, reagents, and materials.
• Comply with laboratory safety protocols and policies at all times.
• Utilize software applications, including spreadsheets, databases, statistical tools, and reporting platforms to assemble, manipulate, analyze, and present data.
• Properly handle potentially hazardous chemical and biological materials.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency and performance.
• Perform DNA extraction, purification, quantification, and normalization using established molecular biology protocols.
• Assist with microarray-based genotyping techniques and sample processing.
• Support SNP genotyping assays and perform genotyping analysis.
• Assist with communicating test results and data to customers and internal stakeholders.
• Support method validation activities, including hands-on testing and documentation of validation results.
• Conduct quality control checks on samples, reagents, and equipment to ensure reliability and accuracy.
• Troubleshoot and resolve sample quality issues and instrument performance concerns.
• Monitor inventory levels and ensure proper storage of laboratory supplies and materials.
• Perform sample nominations at CDCB.
• Report genotyping conflicts to customers and assist with conflict resolution.
• Process approved pedigree changes through CDCB.
• Analyze data generated from Illumina genotyping platforms.
• Coordinate SNP transfers to data centers worldwide.
• Support the Customer Care Manager with customer support activities within the LIMS system.
• Assist with data entry, reporting, and test-result documentation.
• Work independently with minimal supervision following the completion of training.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Previous laboratory experience.
• Experience using Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
• Knowledge of at least one programming language, with Python preferred.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent pattern recognition and attention to detail.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and learn new technologies and techniques.

• Interest in genetics, genomics, and the dairy industry.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a scientific, biological, agricultural, or related field.
• Associate degree with at least two years of relevant work experience.
• Experience with molecular biology techniques and DNA genotyping processes.
• Experience working with laboratory automation, robotics, or high-throughput testing environments.
• Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
• Experience analyzing large datasets and generating reports.
