How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Certified Medical Assistant
Target specialized medical assistant roles
Focus on positions requiring EHR system expertise, clinical research coordination, or specialized diagnostic procedures. Standard medical assistant duties typically don't qualify for H-1B sponsorship.
Emphasize your healthcare degree requirements
Apply to employers requiring bachelor's degrees in health sciences, medical technology, or related fields. Document how the role demands specialized knowledge beyond basic clinical training.
Consider healthcare systems and research facilities
Large hospital networks, academic medical centers, and clinical research organizations are more likely to sponsor visas for specialized medical assistant positions with complex responsibilities.
Highlight technical and administrative expertise
Showcase experience with medical software, patient data management, regulatory compliance, or clinical trial coordination. These specialized skills strengthen your H-1B case significantly.
Explore related healthcare roles
Consider clinical research coordinator, health information technician, or medical laboratory technologist positions. These roles more clearly meet H-1B specialty occupation requirements than standard medical assisting.
Document your specialized training
Compile certifications in phlebotomy, EKG, medical coding, or specialized equipment operation. Additional credentials demonstrate the specialized nature of your medical assistant role.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Certified Medical Assistants qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Most standard medical assistant roles don't qualify for H-1B sponsorship because they don't meet the specialty occupation requirement. However, positions requiring bachelor's degrees and involving specialized healthcare technology, clinical research, or complex administrative functions may qualify. The role must demonstrate specialized knowledge beyond basic clinical tasks.
What degree do I need for medical assistant visa sponsorship?
You typically need a bachelor's degree in health sciences, medical technology, healthcare administration, or a related field. While many medical assistant positions only require certificates or associate degrees, H-1B sponsorship requires the employer to demonstrate that a bachelor's degree is necessary for the specific role.
Which healthcare employers sponsor medical assistants for visas?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, pharmaceutical companies, and clinical research organizations are most likely to sponsor specialized medical assistant roles. These employers often have positions requiring bachelor's degrees and specialized knowledge that can justify H-1B sponsorship requirements.
Can medical assistants get sponsored without a healthcare degree?
It's very difficult. H-1B sponsorship requires demonstrating that the role needs specialized knowledge typically obtained through a bachelor's degree. While the three-for-one rule allows work experience to substitute for education, most medical assistant positions don't meet the specialty occupation threshold regardless of educational background.
What are the H-1B approval rates for medical assistant roles?
Approval rates for medical assistant roles are lower than average because USCIS often finds these positions don't qualify as specialty occupations. Success rates improve significantly for roles with clear bachelor's degree requirements, specialized technology responsibilities, or clinical research components that demonstrate the need for specialized knowledge.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Certified Medical Assistant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
