Advertising roles in California do not require a state-issued license, but most employers expect a bachelor's degree in advertising, marketing, or communications. Building a portfolio of real or spec campaigns is often as important as your degree. Many California agencies and brand-side teams also value certifications from Google, Meta, or the Interactive Advertising Bureau as a concrete way to demonstrate platform expertise.
How much do advertisings make in California?
Advertisings in California earn a median of about $167,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,800 for the lowest 10% to over $321,360 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire advertisings in California?

Which California cities have the most advertising jobs?
La Verne, Los Angeles, and Irvine have the most advertising openings in California. Los Angeles dominates because of its entertainment, media, and lifestyle brand industries, while San Francisco and San Diego draw agency and in-house roles tied to their technology and biotech sectors, and suburban markets around those metros add volume through regional brand and retail employers.

The most realistic entry path is an internship or junior coordinator role at a California agency or in-house brand team, where you build platform skills and portfolio work simultaneously. Large California employers in entertainment and technology regularly run structured internship programs open to recent graduates. Transitioning from a social media coordinator or marketing assistant role is a common lateral move, and a Google Ads or Meta certification gives candidates without agency experience a concrete credential to point to.
