Outside Sales Representative Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a outside sales representative in California?
Most outside sales representative roles in California require no state-issued license, but competitive candidates hold a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a field relevant to the industry they are selling into. Many employers in California, particularly in medical devices and pharmaceuticals, require product-specific training completed after hire. Building a portfolio of documented results, such as territory growth or quota attainment, is the most direct path to landing interviews with California employers.
How much do outside sales representatives make in California?
Outside sales representatives in California earn a median of about $76,490 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $43,200 for the lowest 10% to over $152,760 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire outside sales representatives in California?
Employers hiring outside sales representatives in California right now include Orkin, Hibu, and UniFirst, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, healthcare networks, and large distribution companies means that both enterprise firms and regional independents post regularly throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most outside sales representative jobs?
San Diego, Los Angeles, and Sacramento have the most outside sales representative openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco anchor demand through their dense concentrations of technology companies, healthcare systems, and commercial real estate firms, while San Diego drives strong hiring through its established medical device and life sciences corridor, which relies heavily on field-based sales professionals.
Are there remote outside sales representative jobs in California?
Yes, but they are rare. Outside sales is by definition a field-based role requiring in-person client visits, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 47% of outside sales representative openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those tend to be in account management or inside-outside hybrid roles where a portion of prospecting and follow-up is handled virtually.
How can I get hired as a outside sales representative in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting in an inside sales or sales development representative role at a California-based company and converting to a field territory after demonstrating consistent performance. Large California employers in technology and distribution, including enterprise software firms in the Bay Area and food service distributors like Sysco's California divisions, regularly hire entry-level account coordinators and route sales trainees. A California community college business certificate or a completed sales bootcamp strengthens applications when experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to outside sales representative jobs in California?
You can find and apply to outside sales representative jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California locations. Search the listings to find roles that match your industry background and territory preference, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
