Regional Sales Director Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional sales director in California?
The most direct path is building a track of individual sales performance followed by team leadership experience, typically starting as an account executive or sales manager in California's technology, life sciences, or financial services sectors. California does not require a state-issued license to work as a regional sales director. Most employers look for a bachelor's degree and internal promotion from senior sales roles, and earning a Certified Sales Leadership Professional designation strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do regional sales directors make in California?
Regional sales directors in California earn a median of about $134,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,430 for the lowest 10% to over $300,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire regional sales directors in California?
Employers hiring regional sales directors in California right now include Oakmont Senior Living, Lakeshore Learning Materials, and Belite Bio, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's concentration of Fortune 500 technology and life sciences headquarters means many of these roles oversee teams that sell across the Western United States.
Which California cities have the most regional sales director jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most regional sales director openings in California. The Bay Area's density of enterprise software and cloud companies drives the largest share of postings, while Los Angeles draws heavily from media, fintech, and healthcare employers, and San Diego's medtech and biotech clusters generate consistent demand for directors with life sciences sales backgrounds.
Are there remote regional sales director jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 61% of regional sales director openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the role centers on managing distributed teams and enterprise client relationships over video and phone. Strategic planning, pipeline review, and coaching calls translate well to remote work, though quarterly business reviews and key account meetings typically require in-person travel.
How can I get hired as a regional sales director in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is excelling as a senior account executive or team lead and then applying internally for director roles at large California-based employers such as Salesforce, Oracle, or Thermo Fisher, which run structured sales leadership development programs. Candidates who lack direct management experience can strengthen their profile by completing a frontline sales manager rotation, earning a Certified Sales Leadership Professional credential, or moving laterally from a sales operations or revenue enablement role where cross-functional influence demonstrates leadership readiness.
