Tips for Your Outside Sales Representative Job Search
Quantify your territory and quota wins
Hiring managers in outside sales care about numbers above everything else. On your resume, replace vague phrases like 'grew sales' with specific territory size, quota attainment percentage, and year-over-year revenue change so your output is immediately visible.
Tailor your resume to each vertical
Outside sales resumes that list generic skills get screened out fast. If you're applying to medical device roles, lead with clinical environment experience. For industrial distribution, emphasize technical product knowledge. Matching your resume to the vertical signals you can hit the ground running.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists outside sales representative openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target companies with defined sales territories
Look for postings that specify a named geographic territory rather than vague 'regional' coverage. A defined territory signals the company has an established customer base and a real onboarding process, which shortens your ramp time and raises your odds of hitting commission targets early.
Prepare a concise field sales pitch for interviews
Outside sales interviews often include a live mock pitch or a 'sell me this pen' style exercise. Prepare a tight two-minute pitch for a product you've sold before, structured around problem, solution, and close, and practice delivering it standing up to mirror the field environment.
Negotiate your base-to-commission split upfront
Commission structures vary widely across outside sales roles. Before accepting an offer, ask for the full comp plan in writing, confirm the quota the last rep carried, and clarify whether territories are protected. These details matter more than the base salary figure alone.
Outside Sales Representative Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most outside sales representatives?
The companies hiring the most outside sales representatives right now include Hibu, National Federation of Independent Business, and Cleft of the Rock, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand tends to be strongest in manufacturing, healthcare, and technology distribution sectors.
How many outside sales representative jobs are remote?
About 66% of outside sales representative openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, which is lower than most professional roles because field sales inherently requires in-person client visits. Account management and inside-outside hybrid roles have the highest share of remote flexibility within this category.
How do you become an outside sales representative?
Start by building a foundation in any customer-facing or sales-adjacent role, such as retail, account coordination, or inside sales, to develop objection handling and relationship skills. Then pursue field roles with defined territories at companies that offer structured training programs. Earning a CRM certification and familiarizing yourself with your target industry's product lines accelerates your path to a full outside sales role.
Can you get hired as an outside sales representative with no experience?
Yes, many outside sales representative roles are open to candidates with no formal sales title on their resume. Employers in industries like telecommunications, pest control, and home services regularly hire from retail, hospitality, and customer service backgrounds. Demonstrating comfort with rejection, strong communication skills, and any record of hitting a measurable goal, even outside a sales context, can get you in the door.
What does the outside sales representative interview process look like?
Most outside sales hiring processes include a phone screen with a recruiter, a video or in-person interview with the hiring manager focused on your sales approach and territory experience, and a final round that often involves a mock pitch or a ride-along with a current rep. Some employers add a behavioral assessment or a written territory plan exercise before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to outside sales representative jobs?
You can find and apply to outside sales representative jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your industry background and territory preference, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
