Description:
The Director Radiology Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for radiology and imaging services across an assigned hospital, ambulatory operating unit, or multi-site portfolio. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality patient care, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, financial stewardship, workforce development, and alignment with organizational goals. The Director serves as a key operational leader for imaging services, partnering closely with clinical leadership, physicians, and administrative teams to advance performance, support growth, and maintain exceptional patient and staff experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Oversee on-site managers and daily operations of imaging services including Diagnostic, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Interventional Radiology, mammography, and related modalities.
- Develop, implement, and monitor standardized workflow processes to drive efficiency, throughput, and quality.
- Work closely with access leadership and lead the optimization of scheduling, staffing, and resource allocation to meet volume demands.
- Ensure timely coordination of patient care in partnership with physicians, nurses, and ancillary departments.
- Prepare and implement surge, inclement weather, and other specialized planning efforts to assure patient throughput and staffing plans.
Strategic Planning & Performance Management
- Collaborate with senior leadership to execute strategic priorities, productivity, and service line growth initiatives.
- Utilize performance metrics, dashboards, and data-driven analysis to monitor productivity, cost management, access, and service outcomes.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives and other operational improvement methodologies.
- Support system capital planning, equipment replacement strategy, and facility process and improvements.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage daily productivity metrics.
- Monitor financial performance, identify productivity and expense variances, and implement corrective action plans to align with hospital and ambulatory OU budgets.
- Ensure appropriate charge capture, documentation accuracy, and compliance with billing best practices.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Maintain compliance with all regulatory and accreditation bodies (e.g., Joint Commission, ACR, DOH).
- Ensure adherence to radiation safety standards and maintain oversight of modality specific quality programs.
- Lead and support quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
Leadership & Staff Development
- Provide direct leadership to on-site modality managers, supervisors, and technologists, technical assistants, transport, and other support personnel.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, and develop high-performing team members.
- Conduct performance evaluations and ensure ongoing staff competency.
- Foster a culture of accountability, communication, and patient-centered care.
- Promote staff engagement, retention strategies, and professional development opportunities.
- Responsible for implementing pipeline strategies for staffing. Partner with local schools and programs to secure a consistent flow of students.
- Partner with HR and modality operations leaders to build and grow a competitive platform to attract and recruit best of class talent.
Physician & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Serve as primary administrative liaison to radiologists, procedural physicians, and OU leadership.
- Facilitate effective communication, service recovery, and partnership-building across clinical teams.
- Support interdisciplinary committees, workgroups, and organizational initiatives.
Patient Experience
- Ensure consistent delivery of compassionate, timely, and high-quality imaging care.
- Oversee service recovery, complaint resolution, and patient satisfaction improvement efforts at the OU level.
- Advance initiatives focused on patient access, reduced wait times, improving communication.
- Support technologies focused on an omni-channel scheduling approach and self-service strategies.
Additional Duties as Assigned
Travel: Less than 10% of the time may be required.
Work Type: Hybrid employee - splits time between working remotely and working in the office.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Sciences, Healthcare Administration, Business, Nursing, or a related field.
Experience: 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in radiology, imaging services, or healthcare operations, including responsibility for multi-modality or multi-site operations. Demonstrated experience with operational improvement, financial management, productivity oversight, and strategic planning.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Master's degree.
Licensure/Certification: Current licensure or professional certification relevant to area of clinical expertise, as applicable. Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium Max 25lbs): up to 25 lbs., 0-33% of the work day (occasionally) Lifting 25 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, Bio-hazardous waste chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, Communicable diseases, Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
