Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Service Technician Jobs at ABB
Get certified on ABB-relevant systems first
ABB's Service Technician roles prioritize hands-on experience with industrial automation, drives, and low-voltage equipment. Certifications in NFPA 70E electrical safety or manufacturer-specific training on ABB drives signal to recruiters that you're job-ready, not just trainable.
Target ABB's field service divisions directly
ABB hires Service Technicians across its Electrification, Motion, and Process Automation divisions, each with different equipment focus areas. Applying to the division that matches your background, rather than a generic technician opening, puts your application in front of the hiring manager who actually needs your skills.
Confirm sponsorship eligibility before your first interview
ABB's manufacturing roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship, but field service positions sometimes involve multi-site work that affects how the Labor Condition Application is structured with DOL. Raise your visa situation early so recruiters can route you to an HR contact who handles technical worker sponsorship.
Understand how PERM timing affects your start date
If ABB moves you toward an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathway, the PERM labor certification process through DOL adds months before an I-140 can be filed. Factor this into your timeline if you're on a status with a hard expiration, like OPT or a 60-day grace period.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open ABB roles by visa type
ABB posts Service Technician openings across multiple U.S. regions, and not every posting specifies sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter ABB's active listings specifically for H-1B-eligible roles so you're only spending time on opportunities that match your immigration needs.
Prepare your credentials for USCIS specialty occupation review
H-1B approval for Service Technician roles in manufacturing requires demonstrating the position involves specialized knowledge requiring at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Gather documentation linking your degree field to ABB's specific technical requirements, such as instrumentation, electrical engineering, or mechatronics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ABB sponsor H-1B visas for Service Technicians?
Yes, ABB sponsors H-1B visas for Service Technician roles. Because these positions involve specialized technical knowledge in areas like industrial automation, drives, and electrification systems, they can meet USCIS's specialty occupation standard when supported by the right degree and job description documentation. Your recruiter can confirm which specific openings are eligible.
How do I apply for Service Technician jobs at ABB?
Start by browsing active ABB Service Technician postings on Migrate Mate, where you can filter by visa sponsorship eligibility. Once you identify a relevant opening, apply through ABB's careers portal with a resume that highlights hands-on experience with industrial equipment, certifications like NFPA 70E, and any ABB-specific product knowledge. Flag your visa status early in the process.
Which visa types does ABB commonly use for Service Technician roles?
ABB sponsors both nonimmigrant and immigrant visas for technical roles. The H-1B is the most common nonimmigrant path for Service Technicians with a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent. For longer-term employment, ABB also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process filed with the DOL, which is common for skilled manufacturing positions.
What qualifications does ABB expect for Service Technician roles?
ABB typically looks for a degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, instrumentation, or a closely related field, combined with hands-on experience servicing industrial equipment. Familiarity with ABB's product lines, including drives, motors, and automation controllers, gives candidates a strong advantage. Field service experience that includes commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer-facing technical support aligns well with what ABB's divisions hire for.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at a manufacturing employer like ABB?
The standard H-1B timeline runs roughly six to eight months from offer acceptance to visa approval, since USCIS's cap-subject filing window opens each April for an October 1 start date. ABB can file for premium processing to reduce USCIS adjudication to 15 business days, but lottery selection still applies. If you're transferring from another H-1B employer, ABB can file a cap-exempt transfer and you can start sooner.
