Align your credentials to ABB's engineering hierarchy
ABB's Development Manager roles typically sit above senior engineer and below director. Frame your resume around P&L ownership, cross-functional team leadership, and delivery milestones in manufacturing or industrial automation contexts, not just technical depth.
Target ABB's electrification and motion divisions first
ABB's Electrification and Motion business units post Development Manager roles most frequently. Tailoring your application to these divisions, citing relevant product lines or automation platforms, signals domain fit that generalist applicants miss.
Clarify H-1B versus EB sponsorship scope early
ABB sponsors both H-1B and permanent residence filings for Development Managers, but not every offer includes EB sponsorship upfront. Ask your recruiter specifically whether PERM labor certification is part of the offer before accepting.
Time your application around the H-1B cap cycle
If you need H-1B sponsorship, USCIS opens registration in March for an October 1 start date. Confirm with ABB's HR team by February whether they plan to register you, so you're not left outside the cap window.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active ABB openings
Development Manager postings at ABB move quickly and aren't always visible on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter for ABB roles that confirm visa sponsorship, so you're applying to verified opportunities rather than guessing from the job description.
Prepare a portfolio of manufacturing program outcomes
ABB's interview process for Development Managers typically includes structured cases around program recovery, resource allocation, and stage-gate reviews. Document two or three concrete outcomes from past manufacturing programs with timelines, team size, and measurable results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ABB sponsor H-1B visas for Development Managers?
Yes, ABB sponsors H-1B visas for Development Manager roles. ABB is a registered H-1B employer and has a consistent history of filing petitions for engineering and management functions across its manufacturing divisions. If you're mid-process, confirm with the recruiting team early that your specific role and location are included in their sponsorship scope.
How do I apply for Development Manager jobs at ABB?
You can apply directly through ABB's careers portal or find verified sponsorship-confirmed openings through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where ABB has actively supported visa filings. When applying, tailor your application to the specific business unit, such as Electrification or Motion, and lead with manufacturing program leadership experience rather than individual contributor work.
Which visa types does ABB commonly use for Development Manager roles?
ABB uses H-1B visas for initial work authorization and sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for longer-term employees, including Development Managers. The H-1B covers specialty occupation roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. EB-2 and EB-3 filings go through PERM labor certification with the DOL before USCIS adjudicates the immigrant petition.
What qualifications does ABB expect for Development Manager positions?
ABB typically expects a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field, along with substantial experience managing product or program development in a manufacturing environment. Familiarity with stage-gate development processes, cross-functional team leadership, and industrial automation or electrification domains strengthens your profile considerably. An advanced degree can support an EB-2 sponsorship path if you pursue permanent residence.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Development Manager at ABB?
An H-1B petition filed under the regular processing track takes four to six months after USCIS receives it on April 1, with an October 1 start date. If ABB uses premium processing, USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days. PERM labor certification for a Green Card adds 12 to 24 months before ABB can file the EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant petition.
