About The Team
DoorDash Labs is a team within DoorDash building autonomous delivery robots from the ground up as part of DoorDash's core delivery platform. Our mission is to make autonomous last-mile delivery a reality at city scale — reliably, efficiently, and profitably. With autonomy proven on real sidewalks, we are now focused on scaling our hardware platform from hundreds of deployed robots to thousands and beyond, with a global expansion roadmap through 2030.
About The Role
We are looking for a Senior Director of Hardware and Vehicle Development to own the full hardware lifecycle at DoorDash Labs — from detailed product engineering through volume manufacturing and field service. In your first 90 days, you will get deeply embedded with the engineering and manufacturing teams, lead the selection of a contract manufacturing partner, and develop a lean hiring plan to fill key gaps. A year from now, success looks like a scaled hardware organization, with a clear path to robot profitability and a team that can sustain growth without you being the bottleneck on every decision.
You're Excited About This Opportunity Because You Will…
- Own end-to-end hardware: lead engineering, manufacturing, and field service for our autonomous robot platform, with direct accountability for hitting scale milestones
- Build the team: shape the hardware organization from the ground up, with the authority and budget to bring in exceptional talent — including people from your own network
- Partner across the company: work closely with autonomy, product, and operations teams to translate system requirements into hardware decisions and manufacturing reality
- Drive profitability: lead the shift from proving the technology to reducing cost and improving efficiency, with robot-level profitability as a near-term goal
- Operate with real ownership: this is not a coordination role — you will set the roadmap, make the calls, and be accountable for outcomes in a program that is moving fast and has visible impact
We’re Excited About You Because…
- You have 15+ years of experience in hardware, automotive, or a closely related field, with at least 4-5 years leading a hardware organization at the senior director or VP level
- You have taken a hardware program from early development through volume manufacturing — ideally building something from scratch where you had to develop new approaches rather than inherit mature processes
- You have a track record of building high-performing teams and bringing exceptional people with you — your former colleagues want to come work for you again
- You have selected and managed contract manufacturers and know what a strong CM relationship requires from selection through production ramp
- You are comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment with aggressive timelines, and you know how to identify which processes add value and which ones to skip
Compensation
The successful candidate’s starting pay will fall within the pay range listed below and is determined based on job-related factors including, but not limited to, skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. Base salary is localized according to an employee’s work location. Ranges are market-dependent and may be modified in the future. In addition to base salary, the compensation for this role includes opportunities for equity grants. Talk to your recruiter for more information.

That’s why we offer a comprehensive benefits package to all regular employees, which includes a 401(k) plan with employer matching, 16 weeks of paid parental leave, wellness benefits, commuter benefits match, paid time off and paid sick leave in compliance with applicable laws (e.g. Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act). DoorDash also offers medical, dental, and vision benefits, 11 paid holidays, disability and basic life insurance, family-forming assistance, and a mental health program, among others. Align your resume to DoorDash's engineering scale
DoorDash evaluates Development Managers on experience leading distributed teams and shipping high-availability systems. Frame your resume around headcount managed, cross-functional delivery, and measurable platform reliability outcomes rather than general management responsibilities.
Target roles in marketplace or logistics engineering
DoorDash's core product pillars, including merchant integrations, dasher routing, and consumer experience, generate the highest Development Manager headcount. Filtering your job search to these verticals puts you in front of the teams with the most active hiring pipelines.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
DoorDash sponsors multiple nonimmigrant categories for Development Managers. Knowing whether you're eligible for E-3, TN, H-1B1 visa, or H-1B before the offer conversation means you can confirm fit faster and avoid delays caused by late-stage eligibility questions.
Request premium processing when timing is critical
USCIS offers premium processing for H-1B petitions, returning a decision within 15 business days. If your start date or OPT expiration creates a tight window, ask your DoorDash recruiter early whether the company will elect premium processing for your petition.
Verify your specialty occupation documentation before filing
USCIS scrutinizes Development Manager petitions when the role spans both technical and people leadership. Ensure your supporting documentation connects your specific degree field directly to the technical scope of the role, not just the managerial component.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Development Manager roles
DoorDash posts Development Manager openings across multiple teams and locations. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for DoorDash roles that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're only applying where your immigration situation is already accounted for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DoorDash sponsor H-1B visas for Development Managers?
Yes, DoorDash sponsors H-1B visas for Development Manager roles. The company has an established immigration program that handles petitions through the full H-1B lifecycle, including initial cap-subject filings, transfers from other employers, and extensions. If you're already on an H-1B with another company, DoorDash can file an H-1B transfer so you can start before USCIS issues a final decision.
Which visa types does DoorDash commonly sponsor for Development Manager roles?
DoorDash sponsors several nonimmigrant visa types for Development Managers, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican professionals, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students in authorized training. For longer-term pathways, DoorDash also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, which typically requires initiating PERM labor certification with the Department of Labor.
What qualifications does DoorDash expect for Development Manager roles?
DoorDash typically looks for Development Managers with a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field, combined with hands-on experience leading software engineering teams. Strong candidates have a track record of shipping production systems at scale, managing senior individual contributors, and coordinating delivery across product and infrastructure teams. Domain experience in marketplace platforms, real-time logistics, or consumer-facing applications is a meaningful differentiator.
How do I apply for Development Manager jobs at DoorDash?
You can apply through DoorDash's careers site or find sponsorship-confirmed openings on Migrate Mate, which filters DoorDash Development Manager roles by visa eligibility. Before applying, confirm your visa category matches what DoorDash sponsors, since different roles may suit H-1B, E-3, or TN depending on your nationality. Tailoring your application to the specific engineering vertical, such as logistics, merchant, or consumer, increases your relevance to the hiring team.
How do I time my DoorDash Development Manager application around visa deadlines?
Timing depends on your current status. If you're on F-1 OPT, the 60-day grace period after your end date is not authorized for work, so your DoorDash start date must fall within your valid OPT window. For cap-subject H-1B cases, USCIS only allows an October 1 start date for new filings, so offers made after March typically target the following fiscal year. Starting conversations with DoorDash recruiters early gives the immigration team enough runway to file without rushing.
