Frame Your Technical Sales Background Precisely
ABB hires Sales Business Development professionals who can speak fluently to engineers and procurement leads in manufacturing and industrial automation. Tailor your resume to highlight domain knowledge in areas like robotics, drives, or electrification, not just quota attainment.
Target Roles Tied to ABB's Business Areas
ABB structures hiring around four divisions: Electrification, Motion, Process Automation, and Robotics. Identify which division your background aligns with and filter your applications accordingly. Roles in Process Automation and Motion have historically attracted international candidates with relevant technical sales experience.
Understand How ABB Uses the H-1B for Sales Roles
Sales Business Development positions qualify under the H-1B specialty occupation category when tied to a specific technical domain requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. ABB's petitions for this function typically cite engineering or business disciplines, so confirm your degree field aligns before your first interview.
Ask About LCA Filing Timelines Before Accepting an Offer
Before signing, ask ABB's HR team when they plan to file the Labor Condition Application with the DOL. LCA certification usually takes seven business days, but it must be completed before USCIS can process your H-1B petition. Knowing this timeline helps you set a realistic start date.
Search for Open Roles Using Migrate Mate
Filter by ABB and Sales Business Development on Migrate Mate to surface roles where visa sponsorship is already confirmed. This saves you from applying to positions where sponsorship is ambiguous or where ABB is only hiring U.S. citizens for that specific opening.
Prepare for ABB's EB-2 or EB-3 Sponsorship Conversation Early
ABB sponsors both EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for retained employees. Raise the topic after you have a formal offer, not during interviews. Ask whether your role would qualify for EB-2 based on advanced degree requirements or EB-3, since PERM labor certification timelines differ significantly between the two.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ABB sponsor H-1B visas for Sales Business Development?
Yes, ABB sponsors H-1B visas for Sales Business Development roles when the position qualifies as a specialty occupation. For this function, that typically means the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a field like electrical engineering, industrial engineering, or business with a technical concentration. ABB has a consistent sponsorship history for this job family across its U.S. divisions.
How do I apply for Sales Business Development jobs at ABB?
You can search ABB's careers portal directly or use Migrate Mate to browse Sales Business Development openings at ABB where visa sponsorship is confirmed. When applying, tailor your materials to the specific ABB division the role sits under, such as Process Automation or Robotics and Discrete Automation, since hiring managers evaluate candidates against divisional technical requirements, not just general sales experience.
Which visa types does ABB commonly use for Sales Business Development roles?
ABB primarily uses the H-1B visa for international hires in Sales Business Development. For employees seeking permanent residence, ABB has sponsored both EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards depending on the degree and experience requirements attached to the specific role. H-1B status requires maintaining an employer-employee relationship, so any role change within ABB that crosses business divisions may require a new petition.
What qualifications does ABB typically expect for Sales Business Development roles?
ABB's Sales Business Development positions in manufacturing and industrial automation generally require a bachelor's degree in engineering, applied sciences, or a related technical field, combined with direct experience selling complex technical products or solutions. Familiarity with ABB's product portfolio in areas like variable speed drives, switchgear, or industrial robotics is a practical differentiator. An MBA is valued for senior-level roles but is rarely required at the individual contributor level.
What does the visa sponsorship timeline look like when joining ABB in this role?
After you accept an offer, ABB's immigration team initiates the Labor Condition Application filing with the DOL, which takes around seven business days to certify. The H-1B petition is then filed with USCIS. Standard processing runs three to five months, though ABB can elect premium processing for a 15-business-day adjudication. If you're transferring from another H-1B employer, you can typically start on your first day of employment under H-1B portability rules.
