Frame your PMP credentials for manufacturing contexts
ABB evaluates Project Program Managers against industrial and engineering program delivery, not just general project management. Certifications like PMP or PRINCE2 carry more weight when paired with documented experience managing capital projects, EPC workflows, or factory automation rollouts.
Target ABB divisions with active capital programs
ABB's Electrification and Motion divisions regularly run multi-year capital investment programs that require dedicated program management. Roles tied to those divisions tend to have longer project cycles, which strengthens the employer's case for H-1B sponsorship over a sustained period.
Align your specialty occupation documentation to USCIS standards
USCIS scrutinizes whether Program Manager roles qualify as specialty occupations. Your degree field should align directly with the technical scope of the role. A background in engineering, industrial management, or operations research supports the petition more cleanly than a general business degree.
Clarify H-1B transfer terms before accepting an offer
If you're currently on an H-1B with another employer, ABB can file an H-1B transfer without waiting for cap selection. Confirm with ABB's immigration team that they'll file before your current status expires, since portability requires an active, non-frivolous petition on record.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open roles by location and visa type
ABB posts Project Program Manager openings across multiple U.S. sites. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for H-1B and Green Card sponsoring roles at ABB, so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is already confirmed rather than hoping it comes up in negotiation.
Prepare for PERM labor certification early if targeting a Green Card
ABB sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for long-term hires in program management. PERM requires DOL to test the labor market before your petition can advance. Starting that conversation before or shortly after your H-1B approval avoids losing years of priority date eligibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ABB sponsor H-1B visas for Project Program Managers?
Yes, ABB sponsors H-1B visas for Project Program Manager roles. The company has a consistent track record of filing H-1B petitions for this function, particularly in its manufacturing, electrification, and industrial automation divisions. If you're already on an H-1B, ABB can also file a transfer petition, which allows you to begin work as soon as the transfer is filed rather than waiting for approval.
How do I apply for Project Program Manager jobs at ABB?
Apply directly through ABB's careers portal and target roles that explicitly reference visa sponsorship in the job posting. Tailor your application to emphasize industrial or engineering program delivery experience, since ABB's hiring managers prioritize candidates who have managed technically complex, multi-stakeholder projects. Migrate Mate lets you filter ABB's open roles by visa sponsorship type so you can focus your applications on confirmed sponsorship positions.
Which visa types does ABB commonly use for Project Program Manager roles?
ABB primarily uses the H-1B visa for initial work authorization for Project Program Managers. For long-term hires, the company sponsors employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 preference categories, typically via the PERM labor certification process. The right category depends on your education level and the specific role requirements. EB-2 requires an advanced degree or equivalent, while EB-3 covers roles that require at least a bachelor's degree.
What qualifications does ABB expect for Project Program Manager roles?
ABB typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, industrial management, or a closely related technical field. Relevant certifications like PMP strengthen your profile. Practical experience managing cross-functional programs in manufacturing, energy infrastructure, or capital project environments is weighted heavily. Candidates who can demonstrate ownership of project budgets, vendor relationships, and milestone delivery in industrial settings are the strongest fit.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at a company like ABB?
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, USCIS runs the lottery in March for an October 1 start date, so your earliest possible start is roughly six months after selection. ABB can request premium processing for a 15 business day adjudication once your petition is filed. If you're transferring from another H-1B employer, the timeline compresses significantly since cap-exempt transfers can be filed and approved at any point in the year.
