Frame your experience around industrial software domains
ABB's Software Engineer roles sit inside manufacturing and energy automation, not consumer tech. Tailor your resume to emphasize embedded systems, SCADA, PLC integration, or industrial IoT rather than generic full-stack or web development experience.
Target ABB divisions with the deepest engineering headcount
ABB's Electrification and Process Automation divisions consistently post Software Engineer openings. Focusing your applications on these units improves your odds of landing a team that regularly runs through the H-1B sponsorship process.
Search open Software Engineer roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters ABB's Software Engineer listings by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're not wasting applications on postings that won't support H-1B filing. Browse current openings there before applying directly.
Clarify sponsorship scope before your offer stage
Ask your ABB recruiter whether the role supports H-1B transfer if you're already in status, or only new cap-subject petitions. Large employers often have internal policies that affect which filing path applies to your specific situation.
Verify your employer's E-Verify enrollment before starting
ABB participates in E-Verify as required for federal contractors. If you're transitioning from OPT or STEM OPT, confirm your start date aligns with your authorization window, since E-Verify enrollment affects how quickly your employment record is confirmed with USCIS.
Prepare your credential evaluation documentation early
ABB's H-1B filings for Software Engineers require demonstrating specialty occupation status. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before your offer is finalized so it's ready when your employer's legal team needs it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ABB sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, ABB sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineers. The company has a consistent record of filing H-1B petitions for this role across its U.S. divisions, particularly in automation and electrification. Sponsorship is typically handled through ABB's in-house legal team or an external immigration counsel, and the process follows the standard USCIS cap-subject or cap-exempt petition cycle depending on your situation.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at ABB?
You can apply directly through ABB's careers portal or browse sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa support. When applying, tailor your application to the specific ABB division, such as Process Automation or Electrification, since hiring decisions are largely division-level. Referencing relevant industrial software experience in your application materials improves your chances of clearing the initial screening.
Which visa types does ABB commonly use for Software Engineer roles?
ABB most commonly sponsors Software Engineers on H-1B visas for temporary work authorization. For longer-term pathways, ABB also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process. The right pathway depends on your qualifications, how long you've been with the company, and whether your role meets the criteria for a National Interest Waiver under EB-2.
What qualifications does ABB expect for sponsored Software Engineer roles?
ABB's Software Engineer roles that qualify for H-1B sponsorship require at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, since USCIS requires a specific degree nexus for specialty occupation approval. Roles in ABB's industrial automation divisions often also expect familiarity with real-time systems, C or C++, or industrial communication protocols alongside general software development skills.
How do I time my application around the H-1B cap cycle?
USCIS opens H-1B registrations in March each year for the fiscal year starting October 1. If you're targeting a cap-subject H-1B at ABB, you need your offer finalized before the registration window opens so ABB's legal team can submit your registration. If you're already on H-1B with another employer, an H-1B transfer to ABB can happen at any time and isn't tied to the cap cycle.
