Frame your background in therapeutic area strategy
AbbVie's BD team focuses heavily on oncology, immunology, and neuroscience deal flow. Tailor your resume and cover letter to show experience evaluating assets or partnerships in these specific therapeutic areas, not just general business development.
Clarify your visa category before applying
AbbVie sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT among others. Know which category you need before your first recruiter call so you can confirm fit early and avoid late-stage surprises when offer paperwork begins.
Highlight licensing or deal execution experience explicitly
Strategic BD roles at biopharma companies require evidence of end-to-end deal involvement. Listing deal size or stage in your application materials signals readiness for AbbVie's complex, multi-stakeholder transaction environment.
Use Migrate Mate to target verified AbbVie BD openings
AbbVie posts Strategic Business Development roles across multiple locations and seniority levels. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for AbbVie roles that match your visa type so you apply to positions already aligned with your sponsorship needs.
Confirm LCA wage compliance for your work location
AbbVie has BD hubs in North Chicago and other metro areas with different DOL prevailing wage levels. The LCA your employer files must meet the wage floor for the specific worksite, so verify the tier for your intended location during offer negotiation.
Plan around PERM timing if you need a Green Card pathway
PERM labor certification for EB-2 or EB-3 takes 12 to 18 months before USCIS even begins adjudicating an I-140. For Strategic BD roles requiring advanced degrees, raise long-term immigration planning with HR during the offer stage, not after you start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AbbVie sponsor H-1B visas for Strategic Business Developments?
Yes, AbbVie sponsors H-1B visas for Strategic Business Development roles. These positions typically require a degree in a specialty occupation such as business, life sciences, or a related field, which satisfies H-1B eligibility. AbbVie also sponsors H-1B transfers, so if you're already on an H-1B with another employer, you can begin working as soon as AbbVie files your transfer petition.
How do I apply for Strategic Business Development jobs at AbbVie?
You can browse and apply for Strategic Business Development roles at AbbVie through their careers portal. For a faster way to find openings filtered by visa sponsorship type, Migrate Mate aggregates AbbVie's BD listings so you can identify roles that match your specific visa category. Prepare application materials that speak directly to AbbVie's therapeutic focus areas and pipeline strategy.
Which visa types does AbbVie commonly use for Strategic Business Development roles?
AbbVie sponsors a range of visa categories for BD professionals including H-1B, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 visa for Australian nationals, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1 visa for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visa categories for permanent residence pathways.
What qualifications does AbbVie expect for Strategic Business Development positions?
AbbVie's Strategic BD roles typically require a graduate degree such as an MBA, PhD, or MD, combined with direct biopharma or biotech industry experience. Candidates with backgrounds in licensing, asset evaluation, M&A, or corporate strategy in oncology, immunology, or neuroscience are particularly competitive. Strong financial modeling skills and familiarity with due diligence processes are standard expectations.
How long does AbbVie's visa sponsorship process take for new BD hires?
Timeline depends heavily on your visa category. H-1B cap-subject petitions follow USCIS's April lottery and October 1 start date, so planning 12 months ahead is prudent. TN and E-3 visas move faster, often processed at a consulate within weeks. For employer-sponsored Green Cards through PERM, the full process from initiation to I-140 approval typically spans two to three years minimum.
