Frame your science fluency for commercial roles
Thermo Fisher's business development teams sell into research, clinical, and biopharma accounts. Align your resume to show domain knowledge in life sciences or diagnostics alongside revenue or partnership outcomes, not just general sales experience.
Confirm LCA filings before your interview
Search the DOL's OFLC disclosure database for Thermo Fisher's Labor Condition Applications under Strategic Business Development or related titles. This tells you which locations actively file and which job titles appear on approved LCAs.
Target divisions with recurring international hiring
Thermo Fisher's Specialty Diagnostics, Life Sciences, and Biosciences divisions each hire business development talent separately. Applying directly to a division posting, rather than a generic corporate listing, gets your application closer to a hiring manager who controls sponsorship decisions.
Get your offer letter reviewed before H-1B filing
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation status for business development roles. Confirm your offer letter specifies a degree requirement in a directly related field, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, or biomedical sciences, not a generic business or sales qualification.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by sponsorship type
Thermo Fisher posts across dozens of sub-functions under business development. Use Migrate Mate to filter current openings by the visa category relevant to your status, whether H-1B, TN, or F-1 OPT, so you focus on roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Plan your OPT-to-H-1B transition around the April lottery
If you're on F-1 OPT, Thermo Fisher must register you in the H-1B lottery by late March for an October 1 start. Align your offer timeline so your OPT authorization covers the full cap-gap period if your registration is selected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsor H-1B visas for Strategic Business Developments?
Yes, Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsors H-1B visas for Strategic Business Development roles. The role must qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical or scientific field. Candidates with degrees in life sciences, biomedical engineering, or related disciplines are generally well-positioned. Your offer letter should explicitly state the degree requirement tied to the role.
How do I apply for Strategic Business Development jobs at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Applications go through Thermo Fisher's careers portal at jobs.thermofisher.com. Roles are posted at the division level, so searching by business unit, such as Life Sciences or Specialty Diagnostics, returns more targeted results than searching broadly. You can also browse and filter current Strategic Business Development openings at Thermo Fisher by visa type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Which visa types does Thermo Fisher Scientific commonly use for Strategic Business Development roles?
Thermo Fisher sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards for this function. H-1B is the most common path for full-time hires from outside the TN visa-eligible countries. Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying scientific or business roles may be eligible for TN status. Green Card sponsorship through PERM labor certification is available for employees moving toward permanent residence.
What qualifications does Thermo Fisher Scientific expect for Strategic Business Development roles?
Most Strategic Business Development positions at Thermo Fisher require a bachelor's degree in a life science, chemistry, or engineering discipline, with some senior roles expecting an MBA or advanced science degree. Practical experience selling or partnering in biopharma, genomics, or clinical research markets is weighted heavily. For H-1B eligibility, your degree field must directly relate to the technical scope of the role, not just to general business development.
How do I time my visa sponsorship process when accepting a Strategic Business Development offer at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Timing depends on your current status. For H-1B cap-subject candidates, Thermo Fisher must register you in USCIS's lottery by late March for an October 1 start date. For TN holders or F-1 OPT candidates, status transfers can happen faster. Discuss sponsorship intent explicitly during the offer stage, since PERM labor certification for Green Cards can take one to three years from filing and is separate from your initial work authorization.
