INTRODUCTION
We are looking for a senior software engineer to join our new Community Open Source Engineering team focused on growing the Quickwit OSS community and help steer the quickwit-oss collection of projects. You will play a key role in evolving quickwit & tantivy, ensuring community happiness, optimizing the release process and operations, and more. This is a hybrid role, primarily focused on Software Engineering, with a crucial component dedicated to Technical Writing, including producing blog posts and technical guides. Community Open Source Engineering is responsible for fostering engagement and guiding development of Datadog's open source projects outside of the core product and security research areas. The team ensures these projects deliver value to both the open source community and the company by prioritizing community engagement, maintaining software quality and security, and strategically developing new features. As a member of a small team, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the future of Community Open Source Engineering and have a significant impact on the team's direction. At Datadog, we place value in our office culture - the relationships and collaboration it builds and the creativity it brings to the table. We operate as a hybrid workplace to ensure our Datadogs can create a work-life harmony that best fits them.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What you’ll do:
- Assist with managing the Quickwit community, responsibilities include:
- reviewing external contributions and ensuring codebase quality
- triaging reported GitHub issues
- answering questions on GitHub Discussions
- Help define the project governance. Establish contribution guidelines and continuously improve processes to minimize friction for all stakeholders.
- Collect data to assess project health and usage, identifying areas for improvement.
- Actively evangelize Quickwit to expand its reach and impact.
- Advance the Quickwit roadmap. For example, propose and implement architectural changes to facilitate contributions and reduce maintenance burdens, as well as develop highly requested features.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Who you are:
- You love talking with users and interacting with the open source community.
- You have experience managing an OSS project with a community of (internal and external) users and contributors.
- You ship fast, overcome blockers with a practical mindset, and cut through ambiguity.
- You have at least 3-5 years of experience with systems-level programming and preferably using Rust (or similar language).
- You are a proficient written communicator, with the ability to clearly articulate thoughts across a team.
- You are passionate about developer experience and reducing friction for maintainers and contributors.
- You have experience with GitHub Actions and/or release management for complex software projects.
- You’ve worked on extract-transform-load tools or stream processing systems.
Datadog values people from all walks of life. We understand not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you’re passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply.
BENEFITS AND GROWTH
- New hire stock equity (RSUs) and employee stock purchase plan (ESPP).
- Continuous professional development, product training, and career pathing.
- Intradepartmental mentor and buddy program for in-house networking.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Software Engineer Jobs at Datadog Jobs
Align your resume to observability domains
Datadog's engineering roles cluster around monitoring, metrics pipelines, and cloud-native infrastructure. Tailor your resume to reflect experience with distributed systems, APM tools, or time-series data before you apply, not after you get a callback.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Software Engineer roles at Datadog
Datadog posts Software Engineer openings across multiple teams and levels throughout the year. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Datadog roles that have a confirmed visa sponsorship history, so you're applying where the path is already established.
Confirm LCA prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Datadog files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before submitting your H-1B petition. The certified wage level sets a floor on your offer. Understand which wage tier your role falls under so your salary negotiation stays consistent with what DOL will certify.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation now
Datadog's Software Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's in computer science or a related field. If your degree is from a three-year program or a non-U.S. institution, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before your offer letter arrives.

Find Software Engineer at Datadog JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Datadog sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Datadog sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineers and has done so consistently across multiple hiring cycles. They also support H-1B1 filings for Chilean and Singaporean nationals. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, Datadog can file an H-1B transfer, which lets you start work as soon as USCIS receives the petition.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Datadog?
You can apply directly through Datadog's careers page or browse their open Software Engineer roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. Datadog's engineering hiring process typically includes an initial recruiter screen, a technical phone interview, and a multi-stage virtual onsite covering coding, system design, and behavioral rounds. Having your immigration status documented and ready to discuss early in the process helps move things along without delays.
Which visa types does Datadog sponsor for Software Engineer roles?
Datadog sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, TN, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Software Engineers. They also support F-1 OPT and CPT, which means new graduates can start on OPT while the company prepares for H-1B sponsorship. The specific visa path available to you will depend on your nationality, degree, and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Datadog expect for Software Engineer roles?
Datadog's Software Engineer roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. Practically, they hire engineers with strong foundations in distributed systems, backend development, or infrastructure tooling. USCIS requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning the degree requirement must be directly tied to the job duties, not just preferred.
How do I time my application to Datadog around my visa status?
If you're on F-1 OPT, apply at least six to nine months before your EAD expires to leave room for Datadog to file an H-1B petition during the April registration window. H-1B cap-subject petitions have an October 1 start date, so a registration submitted in March won't translate to approved status until mid-year at the earliest. TN holders can transfer to Datadog more quickly since TN has no annual cap or lottery.
