Align your credentials to Kiewit's project types
Kiewit staffs Civil Project Engineers on heavy civil and energy infrastructure work, so hands-on experience with earthwork, site utilities, or power plant construction carries more weight than general civil background. Translate your resume to match these project types before applying.
Target postings tied to active project pursuits
Kiewit hires Civil Project Engineers ahead of awarded projects, often posting roles tied to specific regions or bid pipelines. Focus on district offices with active energy or industrial construction activity, since sponsorship decisions happen faster when a project is already funded.
Get your EIT certification before your offer stage
Kiewit frequently expects Engineers-in-Training certification for entry and mid-level Civil Project Engineer roles. Having your EIT or FE exam passed before you receive an offer removes a conditional hiring hurdle that can slow down the H-1B petition timeline.
Understand how Kiewit structures H-1B filings
For cap-subject H-1B petitions, USCIS registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If Kiewit extends you an offer in the fall or winter, your actual start date may be nearly a year out. Confirm this timeline early so it does not conflict with your OPT or grace period expiry.
Use Migrate Mate to surface Civil Project Engineer openings at Kiewit
Kiewit posts Civil Project Engineer roles across many district offices, and not all appear consistently on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Kiewit roles that include visa sponsorship, so you are only pursuing positions where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Clarify PERM timing if you need a Green Card pathway
Kiewit sponsors Green Cards for long-term engineers through the PERM labor certification process with DOL. Ask your recruiter during the offer stage whether the role is eligible for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, since PERM requires you to be in a permanent position, not a project-based contract role.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Project Engineers?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Civil Project Engineers. The company files petitions for engineers in this role across its energy and heavy civil divisions. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions have a March registration window and an October 1 start date, your offer timing relative to your current visa status matters significantly. Confirm the sponsorship path with your recruiter before accepting an offer.
Which visa types does Kiewit commonly use for Civil Project Engineer roles?
Kiewit uses H-1B as the primary work visa for Civil Project Engineers. The company also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose role qualifies under the USMCA engineer category, and J-1 visa for certain training positions. For long-term engineers, Kiewit has sponsored Green Cards through EB-2 and EB-3 PERM pathways.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for Civil Project Engineer positions?
Kiewit typically expects a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. For entry-level roles, passing the FE exam and holding EIT status is a common requirement. Mid-level and senior roles generally require field or project experience on heavy civil, energy, or industrial construction projects. Familiarity with project controls, subcontract management, and construction scheduling tools strengthens your candidacy considerably.
How do I apply for Civil Project Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
You can apply through Kiewit's careers portal or find sponsorship-confirmed openings through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for Kiewit roles where visa sponsorship is available. When applying, tailor your resume to the district office and project type listed in the posting. Kiewit hires regionally, so targeting offices with active energy or infrastructure pipelines in your preferred location improves your chances of a fast response.
How do I time my H-1B filing if I'm on OPT and receive a Kiewit offer?
If you are on F-1 OPT, confirm whether your OPT end date and any STEM OPT extension cover the gap until October 1, when H-1B employment can begin. USCIS registration opens each March, and the earliest an approved H-1B can take effect is October 1 of that year. If your OPT expires before then, STEM OPT or a cap-gap extension may bridge the gap. Raise this with Kiewit's HR team immediately after receiving your offer.
