INTRODUCTION
Molex possesses a rich heritage in the optical industry, delivering high-performance, field-proven optical solutions spanning components, modules, and fully integrated line cards. We provide cutting-edge wavelength management and amplifier technologies, supported by deep optical, mechanical, electrical, and software integration capabilities. These strengths enable Molex to serve the evolving needs of high-density, high-bandwidth, and flexible optical networks.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Mechanical Engineer will own mechanical designs of advanced optoelectronic packages (e.g., CPO, ELSFP). This role is responsible for all elements of mechanical design that relate to component design, manufacturability and long-term reliability. The position requires close collaboration with R&D and product design teams, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to ensure laser components meet stringent optical, mechanical, and Telcordia reliability requirements.
Essential Functions
- Lead mechanical design and layout of laser diode packages and various subcomponents
- Design and optimize optical subassemblies (laser, lens system, isolator/grating, fiber coupling) to achieve submicron alignment (<±0.5 µm lateral, <±1 µm axial) with high coupling efficiency and long-term stability
- Develop package architectures integrating TEC, submounts (e.g., AlN, CuW), hermetic housings, lids, getters, and fiber attach features (e.g., ferrules, V-grooves)
- Ensure compatibility with active alignment processes, including fixture design, alignment tolerancing, and drift control during solder reflow or epoxy cure
- Perform thermal and mechanical design analysis:
- FEA for CTE mismatch, stress, and deformation
- Thermal modeling for junction temperature, heat spreading, and TEC load
- Evaluate impact on wavelength shift and coupling efficiency
- Design for high thermal power density (>5-10 W/mm²) and ensure adequate thermal margin
- Design for hermetic sealing approaches (e.g., seam seal, laser weld) meeting leak rate targets (e.g., <10)
- Select and qualify materials and attachment methods (AuSn solder, soft solder, epoxies) considering voiding, creep, and long-term adhesion
- Partner with suppliers to evaluate component capability, process maturity, and long-term reliability risks
- Drive design-for-manufacturability (DFM) to enable high-yield, scalable production
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters in Mechanical Engineering
- At least 10+ years of industry R&D experience with mechanical design of fiber-coupled optoelectronic packages developed and transferred to manufacturing environments
- Demonstrated experience with optical alignment of components to submicron tolerances, designing for high thermal power density
- Proven ability to design for submicron stability over life (e.g., thermal drift, mechanical creep)
- Mechanical design using Mech software package/s with finite element analysis (FEA)
- Strong background in FEA modeling to calculate stress/design from CTE mismatch, optic misalignment, thermal limits, etc. CFD is a plus but not required
- Knowledgeable of various optical components (e.g., gratings, mirrors, lenses), stable attachment methods (e.g., epoxy and solder based)
- Knowledgeable in component qualification methodologies
- Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) methodology: design, verification, qualification, release to manufacturing
- Strong communication skills with suppliers, customers, and cross-functional internal teams
COMPENSATION
- Salary Range: $180,000 - $250,000 per year

Tailor your portfolio to connector engineering
Molex hires Mechanical Engineers to design precision components for interconnect systems. Frame your portfolio around tolerance-critical work, materials selection for high-cycle assemblies, or miniaturization challenges. Generic CAD samples won't differentiate you in a specialized hardware review.
Identify which Molex sites actively hire
Molex operates engineering sites across multiple U.S. states with varying hiring volume. Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data by employer name to identify which locations have historically filed for Mechanical Engineer roles before targeting a specific office.
Align your H-1B timeline with Molex's filing calendar
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. If you're interviewing at Molex in late fall or winter, discuss sponsorship intent early so your offer letter and I-129 preparation don't compress into a rushed March window.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Mechanical Engineer roles
Molex posts Mechanical Engineer openings across multiple disciplines and sites. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles at Molex that are open to sponsored candidates, so you're not manually screening postings that exclude visa applicants.
Prepare for PERM if a Green Card is your goal
Molex sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for engineering roles, which require a PERM labor certification through DOL. Understand that PERM requires Molex to document a good-faith recruitment process, so your application needs to meet the formally defined minimum requirements exactly as posted.

Find Mechanical Engineer at Molex JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Molex sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Molex sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers. Mechanical Engineering is a recognized specialty occupation under USCIS standards, and Molex has a documented history of filing H-1B petitions for engineering roles. If you're cap-subject, your petition would be filed in the annual lottery window with an October 1 start date.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Molex?
Applications go through Molex's careers portal, where you can search by role and location. To find openings that are specifically open to visa-sponsored candidates, Migrate Mate filters Molex's Mechanical Engineer postings by sponsorship eligibility, which saves time if you need work authorization. Tailor your application to the specific engineering discipline each posting targets.
Which visa types does Molex commonly use for Mechanical Engineers?
Molex sponsors across several visa categories for Mechanical Engineers, including H-1B for specialty occupation workers, F-1 OPT and CPT for students in training, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles, J-1 for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visas for engineers pursuing permanent residence.
What qualifications does Molex expect for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Most Mechanical Engineer postings at Molex require a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. Roles focused on interconnect systems often value experience with precision manufacturing, GD&T, CAD platforms like SolidWorks or CATIA, and familiarity with materials used in high-density connector assemblies. Senior roles typically expect demonstrated project ownership, not just execution.
How do I understand the timeline from offer to visa approval for a Molex role?
Timeline depends on your visa category. H-1B processing runs three to six months standard, or two to four weeks with USCIS premium processing. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship takes considerably longer due to the DOL labor certification stage. F-1 OPT authorization can be in place before your start date if your EAD application is filed at least 90 days before employment begins.
