The Opportunity
Netflix seeks a Manager/Counsel to join the US Studio Partnerships Business & Legal Affairs team in a legal affairs-focused role in Los Angeles, CA.
The US Studio Partnerships Business & Legal Affairs team is a crucial part of the UCAN Original Series BLA team, handling all business & legal affairs aspects of Netflix’s US original series that have a third-party studio partner involved (primarily licensed and co-production arrangements). The executives on this team manage a significant portion of the original series programming on Netflix’s US programming slate, and are required to be fast, nimble, detail-oriented dealmakers, with a sophisticated understanding of complex rights deals and an emphasis on finding creative solutions and maintaining positive working relationships with both internal and external partners. This is a hybrid business affairs and legal affairs team, with each executive responsible for both the business and legal aspects of the job (with the balance being skewed more heavily towards legal affairs for the Manager/Counsel roles on the team).
This Manager/Counsel role will take on a wide-range of responsibilities within the team, including:
- Drafting and negotiating licensing and co-production agreements for scripted original series handled by the team;
- Strategically advising studio partners and producers on Netflix’s preference and requirements around deal terms - including on above-the-line talent deals (e.g., writer, showrunner, actors), complex rights deals, etc. - while understanding and taking into consideration Netflix’s approach on its own studio projects;
- Overseeing projects throughout all stages from development through post-production and exhibition on Netflix’s global streaming service from a business and legal standpoint, with the ability to navigate complex matters that arise during the production lifecycle;
- Collaborating closely with internal business partners (e.g., the content team and other business affairs and legal affairs executives) and cross-functional partners (e.g., production, finance, intellectual property, employment, labor, tax, marketing, consumer products and brand partnerships); and
- Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with external parties (e.g., business and legal affairs execs at partner studios, talent representatives, etc.).
Qualifications and Work Experience
BA/BS, JD, and bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state.
At least 7 years of on-point experience in the scripted series production and/or licensing/co-production space, in a legal-focused and/or combined business affairs/legal affairs role. Prior direct experience drafting rights agreements, licensing and/or co-production agreements, and other similar agreements is required. Experience at another SVOD platform and/or at a studio dealing with SVOD network partners is strongly preferred.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A firm grasp of all aspects of the development, production, and distribution of scripted television, including robust industry knowledge and relationships.
- Exceptional attention to detail and drafting skills.
- Clear and concise communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical capabilities and judgment, even when the rules are unclear and the issues are of first impression, and an ability to prioritize issues in terms of business impact.
- Ability to distill important points and frame and present issues succinctly.
- Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to pivot quickly and fluidly, think practically and be solution-oriented.
- Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside their area of expertise.

Frame your deal experience in measurable outcomes
Netflix Business Development hires are evaluated on commercial impact. Before applying, document specific partnerships, licensing deals, or revenue-generating agreements you've led. Quantified outcomes signal the strategic value that Netflix looks for in this function.
Target Netflix's content and platform partnership teams
Netflix Business Development spans content licensing, device partnerships, and operator deals. Research which vertical aligns with your background and tailor your application to that team. Generic applications rarely advance at a company with this level of specialization.
Understand how your visa category affects your start date
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your remaining authorization window before accepting an offer. Netflix will need to file your H-1B petition before your OPT expires, and the cap-subject lottery runs once a year, so timing between offer and filing matters significantly.
Confirm E-3 eligibility before the interview stage
Australian citizens can request E-3 sponsorship from Netflix without entering the H-1B lottery. Have your credentials and a specialty occupation argument ready, because Netflix will need a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL before your visa appointment.
Search verified sponsorship data to prioritize your applications
Use Migrate Mate to identify Business Development roles at Netflix that are actively open and tied to sponsorship history. Filtering by visa type and role function saves time and confirms you're targeting positions where sponsorship is a real option.
Prepare for extended timelines if PERM sponsorship is the path
For Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3, Netflix must complete a PERM labor certification through DOL before filing your immigrant petition. That process can take a year or more, so raise it early in the offer stage rather than after signing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Netflix sponsor H-1B visas for Business Developments?
Yes, Netflix sponsors H-1B visas for Business Development roles. Because the H-1B is subject to an annual cap and lottery administered by USCIS, Netflix typically files petitions in April for an October 1 start date. Candidates already on H-1B with another employer may be eligible for a cap-exempt transfer, which bypasses the lottery entirely.
Which visa types does Netflix commonly use for Business Development roles?
Netflix sponsors a range of visa types for Business Development positions, including the H-1B for most international professionals, the E-3 exclusively for Australian citizens, TN visa status for Canadian and Mexican nationals under USMCA, and F-1 OPT or CPT for students in eligible degree programs. Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is also available for qualifying employees.
What qualifications does Netflix expect for Business Development roles?
Netflix Business Development roles typically require experience in deal structuring, content licensing, or platform partnerships, depending on the team. A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is standard, and many senior roles expect a background in media, technology, or investment banking. Demonstrated experience closing complex, multi-party agreements in a commercial setting is consistently valued.
How do I apply for Business Development jobs at Netflix?
You can browse open Business Development positions at Netflix directly through their careers site or through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type and function. When applying, align your resume to the specific partnership vertical, highlight deal outcomes rather than responsibilities, and confirm your visa eligibility before the first interview to avoid surprises during the offer stage.
How do I plan around Netflix's visa sponsorship timeline for a Business Development offer?
The timeline depends on your visa category. E-3 and TN sponsorship can typically be arranged within weeks of an offer, while H-1B cap-subject petitions are tied to the April filing window. If you're on OPT, confirm your expiration date and discuss H-1B filing timing with the recruiting team before signing. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship is a separate, longer process that usually begins after your employment starts.
