Tips for Finding Physical Therapist Jobs at Sutter Health
Verify Your Credentials Before Applying
California requires Physical Therapists to hold a state license from the Physical Therapy Board of California. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation completed before submitting applications so Sutter Health's HR team isn't waiting on you.
Target Sutter's Outpatient Rehab Openings
Sutter Health operates both acute hospital units and outpatient rehabilitation centers across Northern California. Outpatient PT roles often have more scheduling predictability, which can make them easier for hiring managers to frame as qualifying specialty occupation positions in an H-1B petition.
Ask About Sponsorship Timing During Screening
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed on April 1 for an October 1 start. When a recruiter contacts you, clarify whether Sutter would file a new cap-subject petition or if they have cap-exempt facilities that allow immediate filing through affiliated research or nonprofit hospital entities.
Understand How PERM Fits Your Long-Term Plan
Sutter Health has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for clinical roles. PERM labor certification requires DOL to confirm no qualified U.S. workers were available, so the recruitment timeline can run 12 to 18 months before USCIS ever sees your I-140 petition.
Use Migrate Mate to Prioritize Active Openings
Not all posted Physical Therapist roles at Sutter Health are actively considering sponsored candidates. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Sutter Health PT positions flagged for visa sponsorship, so you're applying where sponsorship is a live option rather than a long-shot conversation.
Negotiate Offer Terms Before Signing Anything
Once Sutter Health extends an offer, confirm in writing that the employment agreement includes sponsorship support, covers USCIS filing fees on your behalf, and specifies whether premium processing is available. Verbal commitments about sponsorship carry no weight after you've signed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sutter Health sponsor H-1B visas for Physical Therapists?
Yes, Sutter Health has sponsored H-1B visas for Physical Therapists. Physical Therapy qualifies as a specialty occupation because the role requires at minimum a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Your offer letter will need to reflect a position title and job duties consistent with that degree requirement, and Sutter Health's legal team files the petition with USCIS on your behalf.
How do I apply for Physical Therapist jobs at Sutter Health?
You can search and apply directly through Sutter Health's careers portal, or use Migrate Mate to browse Physical Therapist openings at Sutter Health that are tagged for visa sponsorship. When applying, tailor your resume to the specific care setting listed (inpatient, outpatient, rehab) and address your California Physical Therapy Board licensure status clearly in your application materials.
Which visa types does Sutter Health use to sponsor Physical Therapists?
Sutter Health primarily sponsors Physical Therapists through the H-1B nonimmigrant visa for temporary work authorization and through EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visa categories for candidates seeking permanent residence. The EB-3 pathway is the more common route for Physical Therapists given the role's standard degree requirements, with the employer filing a PERM labor certification through the Department of Labor before petitioning USCIS.
What qualifications does Sutter Health expect from Physical Therapist candidates?
Sutter Health expects candidates to hold a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from an accredited program and to have, or be eligible for, a California Physical Therapy Board license. Most postings also require current BLS certification. For international graduates, a credential evaluation from a USCIS-recognized foreign credential evaluation service is typically required to confirm your degree is equivalent to a U.S. DPT.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take if Sutter Health extends an offer?
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, Sutter Health can only file your petition during the April 1 filing window for an October 1 start date, meaning the gap between your offer and your start date could be six months or more. If Sutter Health has cap-exempt affiliated entities, filing can happen at any time and USCIS standard processing currently runs three to five months, with premium processing available to reduce that to about two to three weeks.
