Finance Director Jobs in South Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a finance director in South Carolina?
Most finance directors in South Carolina hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance plus a CPA credential recognized by the South Carolina Board of Accountancy, though the CPA is not always legally required for the title. Employers in Columbia, Charleston, and the Upstate typically promote from senior financial analyst, controller, or finance manager roles. Candidates who combine CPA licensure with manufacturing or healthcare sector experience move fastest into director-level positions in South Carolina's dominant industries.
Which companies hire finance directors in South Carolina?
Employers hiring finance directors in South Carolina right now include State of South Carolina, Jadex, and Phoenix Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. South Carolina's base of large manufacturers, hospital systems, and regional corporate headquarters keeps demand for finance director talent relatively consistent throughout the year.
Which South Carolina cities have the most finance director jobs?
Greenville, Richland County, and Lexington County account for the largest share of finance director openings in South Carolina. Columbia leads because it houses state government agencies, Prisma Health, and numerous corporate regional offices, while Charleston's growth in aerospace, logistics, and tourism has expanded its finance leadership market, and the York County suburbs attract spillover demand from Charlotte-based companies with South Carolina operations.
Are there remote finance director jobs in South Carolina?
Yes, though they represent a minority of openings given how much of the role involves in-person leadership, board-level reporting, and cross-departmental oversight. About 0% of finance director openings tied to South Carolina are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with fully remote arrangements most common in technology-sector or multi-state corporate roles where the director manages distributed finance teams.
How can I get hired as a finance director in South Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is to start as a senior financial analyst or accounting manager at one of South Carolina's large hospital networks or manufacturers, such as Michelin, Sonoco, or MUSC Health, which regularly develop internal talent for leadership roles. Earning a CPA through the South Carolina Board of Accountancy and taking on budget ownership or audit coordination responsibilities in your current role builds the profile employers want. Lateral moves from controller or finance manager positions in mid-size Columbia or Charleston firms are the most common bridge to a first director title.
