Human Resources Assistant Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a human resources assistant in Iowa?
Iowa does not require a state-issued license to work as a human resources assistant. Most Iowa employers expect at minimum an associate degree in human resources or business, with a bachelor's degree preferred for competitive roles. Earning a nationally recognized credential such as the SHRM-CP or PHR strengthens your application. Many candidates start through administrative or payroll support roles at Iowa manufacturers, hospital systems, or state agencies and move into dedicated HR support positions from there.
Which companies hire human resources assistants in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring human resources assistants in Iowa include City of Des Moines, Progress Industries, and Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Iowa's large manufacturing base, major insurance and financial services headquarters in Des Moines, and its extensive healthcare network make the state a consistent source of HR support openings year-round.
Which Iowa cities have the most human resources assistant jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and West Des Moines have the most human resources assistant openings in Iowa. Des Moines dominates due to its concentration of corporate insurance and financial services headquarters, while Cedar Rapids draws openings from manufacturing and food processing operations, and Iowa City's activity reflects the University of Iowa health system and its affiliated institutions.
Are there remote human resources assistant jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and they are reasonably common since much of the work involves data entry, documentation, and employee correspondence that can be done off-site. About 14% of human resources assistant openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, which is consistent with the desk-based nature of the role. Benefits administration and HRIS support tasks tend to appear most often in remote or hybrid postings.
How can I get hired as a human resources assistant in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an administrative support or receptionist role at an Iowa employer that has an internal HR team, then moving into HR assistant duties as openings arise. Large Iowa employers such as MercyOne, UnityPoint Health, and major Des Moines-area insurers regularly hire entry-level HR coordinators and offer structured onboarding programs for candidates without prior HR experience. Completing a SHRM student membership, earning an associate degree from an Iowa community college such as Des Moines Area Community College, or gaining exposure to payroll software gives candidates a concrete edge in those conversations.
