Legal Administrative Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a legal administrative assistant in New York?
New York does not require a state license to work as a legal administrative assistant, so the path runs through education and employer credentialing. Most New York firms expect at least an associate degree in paralegal studies, legal administration, or business, and many prefer graduates of American Bar Association-approved paralegal programs offered at schools like Fordham, Pace, and CUNY. Earning a Certified Legal Secretary credential through NALS strengthens a candidacy considerably.
How much do legal administrative assistants make in New York?
Legal administrative assistants in New York earn a median of about $72,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $42,340 for the lowest 10% to over $107,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire legal administrative assistants in New York?
Employers hiring legal administrative assistants in New York right now include Bank of China, Holland & Knight LLP, and ARNOLD & PORTER LLP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of BigLaw firms, financial institutions with in-house counsel teams, and state and federal courts means consistent demand across both private practice and public-sector settings.
Which New York cities have the most legal administrative assistant jobs?
The cities with the most legal administrative assistant openings in New York are New York, Rochester, and Brookville. New York City dominates the count because of its outsized concentration of global law firms, financial services companies with large legal departments, and federal and state courts, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady openings through regional firms, government agencies, and the state court system headquartered there.
Are there remote legal administrative assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in fully desk-based roles, since legal administrative assistants regularly handle physical filings, in-person court runs, and document management that requires on-site access. About 24% of legal administrative assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Roles focused on document review, scheduling, and correspondence drafting are the most likely to carry a hybrid arrangement.
How can I get hired as a legal administrative assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a legal receptionist or file clerk role at a mid-size New York firm and building from there. Many large New York employers, including CUNY's central administration and state agency legal departments, hire entry-level legal support staff with no prior law office experience and train on the job. Completing an ABA-approved paralegal certificate program and gaining familiarity with NYSCEF e-filing gives candidates a concrete edge over other applicants.
Where can I find and apply to legal administrative assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to legal administrative assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly.
