Nurse Practitioner Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nurse practitioner in Montana?
You become a nurse practitioner in Montana by completing an accredited master's or doctoral NP program, passing a national board certification exam through AANP or ANCC, and applying for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license through the Montana Board of Nursing. Montana also requires a separate application for prescriptive authority. NPs who hold an active license in another compact-member state may practice in Montana under multistate compact privileges.
How much do nurse practitioners make in Montana?
Nurse practitioners in Montana earn a median of about $137,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $105,110 for the lowest 10% to over $166,940 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire nurse practitioners in Montana?
Montana nurse practitioner roles are posted by Billings Clinic, Bozeman Health, and Empower Psychological Services, PLLC and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's hiring is driven largely by regional health systems, federally qualified health centers, and Indian Health Service facilities serving the state's rural and tribal communities.
Which Montana cities have the most nurse practitioner jobs?
Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula account for the largest share of nurse practitioner openings in Montana. Billings anchors the market as the state's largest city and home to major regional health systems, while Missoula and Great Falls support robust demand through their own hospital campuses, outpatient networks, and community health organizations serving large surrounding rural catchment areas.
Are there remote nurse practitioner jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 31% of nurse practitioner openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on clinical nature of most NP roles. The positions most likely to offer remote or telehealth components are psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner roles, where virtual care delivery is more established across Montana's frontier counties.
How can I get hired as a nurse practitioner in Montana with little or no experience?
New NPs in Montana most often enter through new-graduate or transition-to-practice positions at regional health systems such as Billings Clinic and Benefis Health System, both of which have onboarded early-career NPs into supervised primary care and hospitalist roles. Candidates who hold RN experience in med-surg, emergency, or urgent care have a clear advantage when moving into NP roles. Completing a clinical rotation or preceptorship at a Montana facility strengthens your application considerably, and having your prescriptive authority application submitted before your start date removes a common onboarding delay.
Where can I find and apply to nurse practitioner jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to nurse practitioner jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Montana openings updated regularly. Search the roles available, identify the ones that match your specialty and preferred location, and apply directly to the positions that fit your background.
