About us
Clayco is a full-service, turnkey real estate development, master planning, architecture, engineering, and construction firm that safely delivers clients across North America the highest quality solutions on time, on budget, and above and beyond expectations. With $8.1 billion in revenue for 2025, Clayco specializes in the "art and science of building," providing fast track, efficient solutions for mission critical, industrial, life sciences, power & energy, aviation, commercial, institutional, residential and sports & entertainment related building projects.
The Role We Want You For
The Procurement Excellence Office is a newly established function at Clayco, and this role is a foundational position within it. The primary focus is subcontract procurement: bidding, leveling, awarding, and administering the trade labor agreements that drive project cost and schedule performance. Materials and equipment purchasing is a secondary, supporting function.
This is a primarily office-based position. The distinguishing qualification is the combination of field knowledge and commercial aptitude. Candidates with a background in field engineering or project engineering bring an understanding of how subcontractors operate, where scope gaps create cost exposure, and how trade sequencing affects a bid. This role does not own scope writing; it contributes field experience and lessons learned to strengthen bid packages, improve bid leveling accuracy, and inform award decisions.
The Specifics of the Role
Subcontract Bidding and Award
- Review bid packages using field experience to identify scope gaps, misalignments, and execution risks prior to release
- Contribute lessons learned and firsthand construction knowledge to improve scope coverage and bid package quality
- Build and manage bidder pools; coordinate prequalification, vendor outreach, and RFI responses using BuildingConnected
- Perform bid leveling and gap analysis; evaluate submitted bids against the package and document scope variances
- Prepare award recommendations supported by commercial data and field-informed analysis
- Support subcontract negotiations by contributing cost context and construction perspective
Subcontract Administration
- Assemble and execute subcontract packages including scope, exhibits, flowdowns, insurance, and compliance requirements
- Track post-execution deliverables and hold subcontractors to their commitments professionally and consistently
- Support change management by documenting scope events, gathering pricing, and assessing legitimacy before escalation
- Maintain accurate records of commercial deviations, redlines, and resolutions
- Assist with payment application review; verify amounts billed against the schedule of values
Cost and Budget Support
- Maintain WBS-format bid comparisons; track awarded values against the project budget and flag exposure proactively
- Build basis-of-cost documentation: unit rates, allowances, exclusions, and negotiated value rationale
- Assist with change event cost assessments and distinguish legitimate scope additions from commercial claims
Field and Preconstruction Collaboration
- Participate in constructability reviews and preconstruction meetings as an active contributor
- Share field-based lessons learned to inform bid package development and improve trade coordination outcomes
- Support Estimating-to-Operations handoffs by identifying assumptions that may not align with field execution
- Collaborate with project managers and superintendents to surface subcontract issues before they affect field performance
Requirements
The strongest candidates will have a background in field engineering, project engineering, or construction management and are ready to transition into an office-based procurement role. Construction experience and commercial aptitude are the primary qualifications. Formal procurement experience is a plus but is not required.
- 3 to 6 years of experience in field engineering, project engineering, construction management, or estimating on commercial, industrial, or mission-critical projects
- Hands-on experience managing or coordinating subcontractors in the field
- Exposure to scope development, bid packages, or subcontract documents
- Working knowledge of contract structure: scope of work, flowdown clauses, insurance requirements
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with BuildingConnected, Procore, or equivalent platforms is a plus
- Strong written communication and attention to detail

Tips for Your Procurement Specialist Job Search
Quantify savings on your resume
Procurement specialists who stand out include specific cost-reduction outcomes, contract values managed, and supplier consolidation results. Replace vague duties like 'managed vendors' with concrete impact statements tied to budget cycles or supplier counts.
Highlight your sourcing tool proficiency
Many job postings screen for specific procurement platforms like Coupa, SAP Ariba, or Oracle Procurement Cloud. Name the tools you've used in a dedicated skills section so applicant tracking systems pick them up before a recruiter ever reads your resume.
Target listings by contract type experience
Government procurement roles require familiarity with FAR or DFARS, while commercial roles prioritize SOW and MSA drafting. Filtering by sector before applying lets you match your contract background to what hiring managers actually need.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists procurement specialist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a supplier scenario interview
Procurement interviews frequently include case questions where you're asked to evaluate a dual-source versus single-source decision or resolve a supplier quality failure. Walk through your evaluation framework out loud and tie each step to cost, risk, and timeline tradeoffs.
Negotiate with total cost of ownership in mind
When an offer comes in below your target, frame your counter around the value you bring to reducing total procurement cost, not just your years of experience. Cite a specific sourcing outcome or category you own to anchor the conversation in business impact.
Procurement Specialist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most procurement specialists?
The companies hiring the most procurement specialists right now include UniFirst, CEVA Logistics, and Thermo Fisher Scientific, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Illinois, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Healthcare systems, defense contractors, and large manufacturers tend to post the most volume consistently.
How many procurement specialist jobs are remote?
About 11% of procurement specialist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote availability highest in strategic sourcing, contract administration, and category management roles. Positions involving on-site supplier audits, warehouse coordination, or direct materials purchasing are more likely to require in-person presence.
How do you become a procurement specialist?
Start with a bachelor's degree in supply chain, business administration, or a related field, then build foundational experience in purchasing, vendor coordination, or operations. Earning a CPSM or similar certification strengthens your candidacy for mid-level roles. Gaining hands-on experience with a sourcing platform and developing contract drafting skills accelerates the path into specialist positions.
Can you get a procurement specialist job with little experience?
Entry-level procurement roles are available, particularly at large corporations and government agencies that hire purchasing assistants or junior buyers as a pipeline into specialist positions. Internships in supply chain, relevant coursework in sourcing or logistics, and proficiency in spreadsheet-based spend analysis can all substitute for direct procurement experience when applying to these starting roles.
What does the procurement specialist interview process look like?
The process typically includes an initial phone screen with a recruiter, followed by a panel or one-on-one interview with the hiring manager and a supply chain team member. Candidates are usually asked behavioral questions about vendor negotiations and spend reduction, and may face a case scenario requiring a sourcing recommendation. A final round with a director or cross-functional stakeholder is common at larger organizations.
Where can I find and apply to procurement specialist jobs?
You can find and apply to procurement specialist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, specialization, and preferred location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
