Project Administrator Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project administrator in Virginia?
Most project administrator roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in business, project management, or a related field. Virginia has no state-issued license for project administrators, but the Project Management Institute's CAPM or PMP certification significantly strengthens candidacy, especially in Northern Virginia's federal contracting corridor. Employers in defense, IT, and state government contracting increasingly list these credentials as preferred or required alongside relevant administrative experience.
How much do project administrators make in Virginia?
Project administrators in Virginia earn a median of about $120,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $68,020 for the lowest 10% to over $179,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project administrators in Virginia?
Employers hiring project administrators in Virginia right now include DUNRITE, Parsons, and Clark Construction, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's dense federal contracting market, centered in Northern Virginia, means many of the most active hiring organizations support Department of Defense, intelligence community, or civilian agency programs.
Which Virginia cities have the most project administrator jobs?
Chesapeake, Richmond, and Arlington have the most project administrator openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia drives the largest share due to its concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors, while Richmond generates steady demand from state government, healthcare systems, and corporate headquarters, and Virginia Beach reflects ongoing military and construction project activity tied to the Hampton Roads region.
Are there remote project administrator jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and they're more common than in many fields. About 17% of project administrator openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and coordination-heavy nature of the role. Documentation management, scheduling, reporting, and stakeholder communication are the functions most likely to be performed fully remotely, particularly in IT and professional services firms.
How can I get hired as a project administrator in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for project coordinator or administrative assistant roles at Virginia-based federal contractors or state agencies, where structured onboarding is common. Organizations like Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, and SAIC regularly bring on junior coordinators from adjacent roles such as executive assistant, office administrator, or scheduling coordinator. Earning a CAPM certification before applying gives candidates a concrete credential that compensates for limited direct experience in competitive Northern Virginia markets.
Where can I find and apply to project administrator jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to project administrator jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across industries including federal contracting, construction, IT, and healthcare. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employers posting them.
