Most Virginia employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a related field, along with experience in account management or lead generation. Candidates targeting the large federal and defense sector in Northern Virginia benefit from obtaining or being eligible for a security clearance, which many major contractors require before extending an offer.
How much do sales business developments make in Virginia?
Sales business developments in Virginia earn a median of about $63,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,800 for the lowest 10% to over $148,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sales business developments in Virginia?
Employers hiring sales business developments in Virginia right now include Blossman Gas & Appliances, Sinclair Broadcast, and GeoMarvel, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's heavy concentration of defense contractors, technology firms, and managed services providers in the Northern Virginia corridor makes it one of the most active states for this role nationwide.
Which Virginia cities have the most sales business development jobs?
The cities with the most sales business development openings in Virginia are Richmond, Arlington, and Alexandria. Northern Virginia dominates the distribution because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology companies along the I-495 and Dulles Technology Corridor, while Richmond draws openings from financial services, healthcare, and regional corporate headquarters, and Virginia Beach reflects demand from military-adjacent businesses and professional services firms serving the Hampton Roads region.
Are there remote sales business development jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than many fields, since business development work centers on calls, virtual presentations, and digital outreach that translate well to remote settings. About 56% of sales business development openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the role's desk-based nature. Fully remote positions are most common in SaaS, cloud services, and technology sales, while roles requiring in-person relationship building with federal clients in Northern Virginia tend to stay on-site or hybrid.
How can I get hired as a sales business development in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a sales development representative or business development representative role, which large Virginia technology and defense firms use as a training ground before promoting into full account executive or BD positions. Employers such as Leidos, SAIC, and Northern Virginia-based SaaS companies regularly hire candidates from marketing coordinator, inside sales, or customer success backgrounds. Building familiarity with Salesforce and earning a Google Workspace or HubSpot certification gives an entry-level candidate a measurable edge in a competitive Northern Virginia applicant pool.
