Technical Sales Consultant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical sales consultant in Illinois?
Most technical sales consultants in Illinois enter the field with a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, business, or a closely related discipline, since employers in the state's manufacturing and technology sectors prioritize candidates who can hold their own in technical conversations. Illinois does not require a state-issued license for this role. Building a foundation in a technical function, such as engineering, IT support, or product management, before moving into sales is the most common path large Illinois employers use to evaluate candidates.
How much do technical sales consultants make in Illinois?
Technical sales consultants in Illinois earn a median of about $99,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,570 for the lowest 10% to over $162,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical sales consultants in Illinois?
Employers hiring technical sales consultants in Illinois right now include Huron Consulting, Logic, and EY, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and major industrial distributors in the Chicago metro and surrounding suburbs makes it one of the more consistently active states for this role.
Which Illinois cities have the most technical sales consultant jobs?
Chicago, Illinois, and Clinton have the most technical sales consultant openings in Illinois. Chicago anchors the list because of its density of enterprise technology companies, industrial distributors, and healthcare system headquarters, while suburban markets like Downers Grove and Naperville carry significant volume because of the technology and logistics employers clustered along the I-88 corridor.
Are there remote technical sales consultant jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many technical roles, since a portion of the work involves client calls, demos, and proposal writing that can be done off-site. About 33% of technical sales consultant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a genuine shift in how enterprise sales teams operate. The inside sales and solution engineering portions of the role tend to be the most remote-friendly, while key account management and territory coverage still require regular in-person client presence.
How can I get hired as a technical sales consultant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a sales development representative or associate sales engineer role, which large Illinois employers like Grainger, Zebra Technologies, and Chicago-area SaaS firms use to onboard candidates without direct sales experience. Moving laterally from a technical support, field service, or application engineering position is another common route because it demonstrates product knowledge employers value. Completing a manufacturer-sponsored product training program or earning a relevant certification in a platform the employer uses, such as Salesforce Administrator, strengthens an application considerably.
