Technical Sales Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical sales manager in Illinois?
Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline combined with prior outside sales experience in a relevant industry. Technical sales managers in Illinois are not licensed by a state board, so the path centers on industry credentials: certifications from the Manufacturers' Representatives Educational Research Foundation or product-specific vendor certifications carry real weight. Starting in an applications engineer or sales engineer role at a Chicago-area industrial or technology company is the most common entry path.
How much do technical sales managers make in Illinois?
Technical sales managers in Illinois earn a median of about $155,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $78,760 for the lowest 10% to over $282,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical sales managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring technical sales managers in Illinois right now include Trane Technologies, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Motion & Control Enterprises, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's dense mix of Fortune 500 headquarters, manufacturing conglomerates, and fast-growing med-tech firms means openings appear consistently throughout the year rather than in seasonal bursts.
Which Illinois cities have the most technical sales manager jobs?
Chicago, Willowbrook, and Illinois post the most technical sales manager openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because of its concentration of corporate headquarters, distribution hubs, and technology firms, while suburban corridors like Rosemont and Downers Grove draw hiring from medical device and industrial automation companies with campuses just outside the city.
Are there remote technical sales manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based roles, since technical sales managers typically need face time with clients and hands-on product demonstrations. About 64% of technical sales manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions tend to cover SaaS, cybersecurity, or cloud infrastructure products where demos happen over video rather than on a factory floor.
How can I get hired as a technical sales manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a sales development representative or applications engineer role at a Chicago-area industrial, software, or life sciences company, where you build product knowledge and a client-facing record before moving into a full territory. Abbott, Motorola Solutions, and mid-size automation firms in the I-88 corridor regularly hire recent graduates into rotational or associate sales programs. Earning a vendor-specific certification or a Manufacturers' Representatives Educational Research Foundation credential while in that associate role accelerates the transition to a named technical sales manager title.
Where can I find and apply to technical sales manager jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to technical sales manager jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and target industry, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
